Psalm 3:8 – Salvation belongs to the Lord.
The Mormon Church puts a huge burden on the members of the church to help redeem the dead and participate in the work of salvation as they share the Mormon gospel with others not of their faith. This burden is placed on their shoulders at a very young age as they prepare to be baptized and from there prepare to attend the temple as a young man or woman performing baptisms for the dead.
Keeping yourself worthy and morally clean is what the youth in the church must strive to do if they have their eye on attending the temple. They need to be ready to do all they can and give all they can to building up the Mormon Utopia here on earth. They’re taught they can do this by obeying their prophet, sharing the Mormon gospel with their friends, performing temple works for the dead, receiving the priesthood, marrying in the temple and rearing a family dedicated to the church.
Lately it seems the church has adopted a new mantra that it hopes will inspire its members get out and does the work of salvation. With the launch of a new website called Hastening the Work of Salvation and a new broadcast titled The Work of Salvation you get the impression they think their religion has something to do with receiving salvation.
They truly believe it’s up to them to save their friends, ancestors and all the inhabitants of the planet through their temple works, their priesthood and their gospel. Saving the world isn’t their responsibility it’s already been done, it’s complete, and it’s finished by the only one who could do it. I wish they could believe that and accept it.
As Christians we know that we are to fulfill the Great Commission, share the gospel and make disciples, but we don’t consider this to be “the work of salvation”. Any work being done is accomplished by the Holy Spirit, not mere mortals. We’re only God’s chosen instruments to lead people to Him.
In Christ,
