No Fraud in Mormonism
Doctrines of Salvation 1:190; “NO FRAUD FOUND IN JOSEPH SMITH’S WORK. Had the work been based on fraud, it would have been exposed many years ago in some of the many publications and attacks made against it. For upwards of 100 years the revealed gospel has stood the test of criticism, attack, and bitter opposition. I think we can say that never before in recorded history do we have an account of truth passing through such a crucible and being put to such a test as has the truth known in the world as Mormonism.”
Proverbs 19:9; “A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.”
Ah-hem. Mormonism was exposed from its onset.
In 1887 David Whitmer, one of the original three witnesses, left the Church and wrote a booklet called “An Address to All Believers in Christ” exposing many of the improprieties of Mormonism. While Whitmer still held onto some of Smith’s teachings, to say no one “exposed” it is a flat out lie!
Furthermore, there were numerous papers who wrote about Smith’s “fraud” to expose him for what he was and Smith in turn would fire back with his own set of denials. You can read some of those in our article about polygamy denials at the link provided.
One of the earliest protests written against Smith and company came in 1831 in a paper called Millennial Harbinger.
I’m not sure what Mr. Smith was thinking with his comment, but you can also read one of the most famous denunciations of Mormonism in the writings of Mark Twain who commented that the Book of Mormon was “chloroform in print”. We made note of his comments in our article “And it Came to Pass”.
Now let’s look at his comment that no other people group has endured such harsh criticism as Mormonism.
Lest we forget, there’s the whole story of Christianity that comes to mind and certainly that has received more than its fair share of naysayers. While I speak from my position with a subjective view point I dare say that Christianity has gone through more criticism, fire, and demoralizing acts against it than Mormonism could ever hope to imagine.
Can’t get to it from here. Sue
