Articles of Faith, pg 167; “The office of the Holy Ghost is to enlighten the mind, to purify and sanctify the soul, to incite to good works, and to reveal the things of God.” – James Talmage
John 14:26; “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
Hebrews 13:12; “Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.”
The Holy Spirit has many duties that He performs through us and for us.
He teaches, intercedes, leads and prompts us to do many things. The one thing He doesn’t do is sanctify. Jesus did that while on the cross shedding His blood for us. By the time God provided His Spirit to reside inside man Jesus had already sanctified the believers by shedding His blood on the cross.
Typically I wouldn’t jump on such a statement if it were being used in the correct context; however the Church has no concrete teaching on the Holy Spirit and has proven in the past that their teachings on the HS are false.
They’re using this teaching as filler words. It sounds good, it sounds biblical and it sounds like something the HS might do. In the Mormon world the Holy Ghost is nothing but a spirit waiting for a body that makes up the Mormon godhead. He’s not omniscient, he’s not omnipresent and he’s not omnipotent, and has virtually no sanctifying power at all.
Mormons believe they’re responsible for their own sanctification by performing a lifetime of good works.
