Joseph Smith – Seeker After Truth, pg. 178; “In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there is no hell … The gospel of Jesus Christ has no hell in the old proverbial sense.” – John A. Widtsoe
Jeremiah 23:16-17; “Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD. 17 They say still unto them that despise me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you.”
While this particular prophecy from Jeremiah was intended for the inhabitants of the Southern Kingdom during the Babylonian takeover, we can take lessons from their predicament for our lives today.
The prophets at the time kept telling everyone “peace, peace, God won’t bring dire or harm”. This we know was a lie from false prophets! Judah was in a world of hurt and they continued to mock Jeremiah for his doom and gloom messages from the Lord. That is until…until they heard the earth rumble under them from the approaching onslaught of the enemy’s army.
Joseph Smith reminds me of those false prophets in Jeremiah’s day. “Peace to all, there’s no such thing as a literal hell…” “Don’t listen to all of the historical and empirical evidences of God being the ruler of His Kingdom that He established here on earth through His Son Jesus…” “The Bible is corrupt and can’t be trusted…” “God didn’t literally create the earth out of nothing…” “God isn’t a spirit in the sense you can’t see Him because God is an exalted man…”
On and on he went. The short amount of time he spent weaving his tales was long enough to discredit our Lord and lie about every biblical truth known to the body of Christ. Nothing was left unturned, nothing too holy not to blaspheme against. His lies worked like a buzz saw as he tried to disseminate the word of God.
Unfortunately many have believed Smith’s lies from the pit of hell, but God promised us the gates of hell will not prevail against His church! Just as the Lord provided Jeremiah for Judah, He once again provided people in the beginning stages of Mormonism as well as now to expose the lies and warn the flock of the impending danger round about.
