Interview with Wesley P. Walters and Chris Vlachos, August 16, 1978; “Down in Brazil, there is so much Negro blood in the population there that it’s hard to get leaders that don’t have Negro blood in them. We just built a temple down there. It’s going to be dedicated in October. All those people with Negro blood in them have been raising money to build that temple. If we don’t change, then they can’t even use it. Well, Brother Kimball worried about it, and he prayed a lot about it.” – LeGrand Richards
Proverbs 14:12; “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”
I’ve always had questions about this scenario regarding the Church building a temple in Brazil before non-white people were allowed into the priesthood in 1978…
Why did the Church build a temple there or anywhere that has any non-white population if they didn’t believe non-whites were worthy of a true salvation?
From the outside looking in it seems as if they did it for money and I don’t believe this theory is a stretch of anyone’s imagination.
The LDS Church has always taught as it still does today that all churches – Catholic and Protestant alike – are from the devil. Joseph Smith emphatically taught those “whores of Babylon” were in existence to gather money off the backs of poor people to make themselves rich. This is very common thought and belief amongst Mormons.
With that in mind, why was the LDS Church going to Brazil to build a temple in a remote area of the world where the majority of its citizens weren’t/aren’t white? It’s a 3rd world country where most of the population is very poor and the Church is telling them to pony up financially so God can save them. This is no different than what they’ve accused non-Mormon churches of doing!
Why did this so-called prophet of God need to worry about the actions of the Church if they’re doing God’s will?
Why did this prophet of God need to even ask God if they should remove the ban of priesthood from non-whites? Where did God ever tell people – “hey they’re dark so it’s okay to shut them out”?
Why would you go out of your way to build a temple as a place of worship and then have to worry about who is or isn’t allowed? Why would you do such a thing? If you truly loved these people and had a sincere concern for the welfare of their souls wouldn’t you pay for the building to be there and then give them the keys to the building?
This is nothing more than reverse-engineering of wanting to see growth in the Church and make Mormonism look good to outsiders.
