Liahona, “Living a Life of Peace, Joy, and Purpose”, February 2014; “First, establish a set of principles by which you will guide every aspect of your life—in your home, in your Church service, in your profession, in your community.
Second, don’t make exceptions to your standards.
Third, be loyal.
Fourth, live so that the Lord can guide you to where He wants you to be and to serve.
Fifth, serve others.
Sixth, smile.
Seventh, don’t complain.
Ninth, go to the temple.
Tenth, use the Savior Jesus Christ as your example for life.” – Elder Richard O. Scott
Matthew 22:36-40; “Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets”.
The LDS quote above comes from the February 2014 Liahona which was actually a speech Mr. Scott gave in 2011. In his talk he spoke of how people can be successful in life both inside and outside the home and then listed the ten top things someone should follow in order to be successful.
What we found most interesting is #9. I don’t know how many times I’ve had Mormons write to me and say they don’t actually carry their temple recommends around with them on a daily basis and here Mr. Scott has implied they should do just that.
“The last two are the most important.
Ninth, go to the temple. Carry a current temple recommend…”
Having a good business plan or even goals for your personal life is actually a good idea, however, we’re wondering why there’s so much emphasis on petty peripheral matters instead of starting that plan or goal out with God’s top two commandments Jesus spoke of in Matthew chapter twenty-two.
I live by the motto and have taught my kids that life is 90% attitude and 10% circumstance. When we place God’s words into our hearts w/ 2 Cor 10:5 or Philippians 4:8 we’ll never go wrong!
Carrying a temple recommend around with you is another ball and chain you’ve attached that God had no intention of being there. The temple was destroyed over 2,000 years ago – Jesus was crucified more than 2,000 years ago! Why have they rebuilt the temple that Jesus prophesied would be destroyed? And why are they busying themselves with works that won’t give them eternal life with Jesus?
