Mortal Messiah 1:315; “God, who is infinite and immortal, condescends to step down from his throne, to join with one who is finite and mortal in bringing forth, “after the manner of the flesh,” the Mortal Messiah.” – Bruce McConkie
Luke 1:26-27; “And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.”
The Greek word for virgin is “parthenos” meaning a maiden or unmarried daughter – a virgin. The online dictionary defines virgin as a “person who has never had sexual intercourse”.
The Hebrew word for virgin is “bethulah”. It’s used 60 times in the OT and it’s used in a literal way to refer to such virgins as Rebekah and Tamar. When this word is used as the meaning of “maiden” it still carries the same implication of being chaste. (For more information see Holman’s Bible Dictionary.)
Now the reason we’ve gone into such lengthy detail about this word is because of the LDS definition.
As seen above the Mormon Church believes that God came down and had sex with Mary to beget Jesus. The reasons they believe they can technically still refer to Mary as a virgin is because God was an exalted, glorified personage and not just a regular man.
The reasoning they employ is of course reprehensible! There is nothing in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation indicating such an event and in fact everything that God has revealed about himself would negate any notion of such a theory. One would have to ignore or set aside a great portion of the Bible to embrace this ideology.
If Mary had sex (oh how this hurts to write this out) with anyone whether it be a regular human being or an exalted, glorified man she would no longer be a virgin. Just as you can’t be a little bit pregnant, neither can you be a virgin after you’ve had intercourse.
