Evidences and Reconciliations, p 350; “A prophet as here designated is a man endowed with priesthood authority who is called by the Lord…Such men of the past have been Abraham, Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lehi, and others. Such men of the present dispensation have been Joseph Smith and his successors in office.” – John A. Widtsoe
Discourses of Joseph Smith, p 7; “In thirty nations are men and women who look upon him as a greater leader than Moses and a greater prophet than Isaiah; his disciples now number close to a million [the present figure is over 3.5 million]; and already a granite shaft pierces the sky over the place where he was born, and another is in course of erection over the place where he is credited with having received the inspiration for his Book. (John Henry Evans, op. cit., introduction.)”
Hebrews 11:37-39; “They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; 38 (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. 39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise”.
Isaiah was sawn in half. Paul was beheaded as was John the Baptist. Peter was crucified upside down. Moses wandered in a desert…for forty years.
And Joseph Smith? He died in a gun battle after shooting and killing two people. Granted, Smith shouldn’t have died the way he did, but he wasn’t in prison for preaching the word of God. He was there on charges of riot and treason, which by the way is a capital offense.
To infer Smith was greater than Moses or Isaiah is just sad. Remember Isaiah the next time a Mormon tries to say Joe died a martyr and share this with them.
And because Mormons will be celebrating Joe Smith’s birthday today, please pray they keep their focus on Jesus and not Joseph.
