Latter-day Saint Messenger and Advocate, Vol. III, No. 7, April 1837, p 489; “…he [Hyrum Smith] then uttered a prediction that if all would exert themselves as they might three months should not pass away before we can shout victory over the adversary.”
Matthew 23:4; “For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.”
The Saints were looking for a way out of the financial mess they had placed themselves in and needed cash yesterday. The Smith brothers came up with a plan to print their way out of trouble with a new monetary and land system, but in order for all things to work out the brothers needed members of the Church to hand over everything they owned.
In return, members were promised they ‘d receive a handsome reward not only in heaven, but a hefty monetary one as well with the interest that would accrue.
Their adversary was nothing more or less than the feds who came knocking to shut down their illegal activity. At the end of the day, members lost their shirts and the Smith brothers lost their credibility. The real issue about the exodus of Kirtland wasn’t limited to their march into Missouri; members were leaving the Church and God.
