Today we’re continuing our look at a speech given by George Q. Cannon when he systematically rejected God and what He’s done for us. The importance of this speech in the annals of Mormonism is important and shouldn’t be overlooked. It’s one of the many times the LDS Church has gone out of its way to slam Christianity, and the rejection of Christianity is clearly still intact today.
The mindset of the contemporary Mormon hasn’t changed a whole lot from the time he delivered this nonsensical theory in 1883. Today in 2015 the halls of Mormonism are still reverberating with the same message…
Journal of Discourses 24:185 – 186; “It is divided, split into hundreds of sects, without power, having a form of godliness, but lacking the power thereof. It cannot stand; it cannot prevail.”
Christianity Cannot Stand
The fact that Christianity is still here serves as proof of Jesus’ power.
Each time I’ve been asked to speak somewhere I’m humbled and struck by two things. 1. What I see looking out at the audience. 2. Jesus’ reminder of the lies I believed as a Mormon, and the passage of scripture I read as a young girl.
Matthew 16:18; “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
Those audiences are living proof Jesus performed a miracle and doesn’t lie. Some events I speak at are for various churches and others are seminars where people have come from all different denominations and backgrounds.
Collectively, they’re living proof He lives and His Spirit is guiding believers to hear truth. The scene for me is remarkable. To believe in such atrocious lies for 30 years and then to have a curtain pulled back to see a group of believers screams a clear message – Joseph Smith is a liar. The topic about different denominations is a red herring they use to hide the truth and trick people into believing their hyperbole.
1 Cor. 12:12-14; “For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For the body is not one member, but many.”
In light of this one small example, how can Mormons justify what Mr. Cannon taught?
Fall of Christianity?
‘Monstrous as its power is, great as its growth is, co-extensive with the world it may be said, it nevertheless is destined to tumble with Babylon the great. It must go down. It has not the elements of strength. And the great cause of its weakness is, that God is not with it. God’s power does not accompany it.’
Again, there are no specifics in this allegation and it’s become a learned behavior we see with Mormons today. You can read countless Mormon e-mails on this site accusing us of not being true Christians and you’ll find they have one thing in common. The lack of specific information backing their claims.
John 5:37-38 is the result of unbelief and what was true in Jesus’ day is still true today.
John 5:38; “And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. 38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.”
Their rhetoric sounds just like the stuff we hear today on the television. Christians should remember the Crusades and not get on our ‘high horse’ and then we also see when calling out sin is looked upon as intolerant as lawsuits are filed against business owners for their devotion to Christ.
The Babylon comment is the same thing they’ve said in the Book of Mormon and yet Jesus has seen fit to keep us going, just as we pointed out earlier.
Is God Done Speaking?
‘Men in too many instances are Christian because it is popular to be so. But where is the power of Christianity? Where are the revelations of God?’
The answer to this man’s inquiry is the Bible.
Isaiah 40:8; “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”
Hebrews 1:1-2; “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.”
A Silent God?
‘The idea of God having a church on the earth, and never speaking His mind and will unto that church! Why, I will not worship a God who will not speak. He is as Baal of old. I want nothing to do with him. I want the God of heaven, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, a God who can speak and who can manifest His mind and His will, who can guide His people, who can bestow gifts and blessings upon His people, who can hear and answer their prayers when they call upon him.’
Christians worship the God of the Bible who still speaks today. Reassurance He’ll never leave us can be found from the days of Moses in Deut 31:6, and thousands of years later in the book of Hebrews when He said the Spirit intercedes for us (Hebrews 7:25). If He’s interceding for us, it only stands to reason He’s listening in on our pleas.
The huge point here is in the statement made by Mr. Cannon which paints a picture of how the Church has categorically rejected the God of the Bible. He said ‘I want nothing to do with him’. That’s just very sad. Millions of other nonbelievers have said the same thing.
Hating the Word of God
“Christianity is the most ridiculous, the most absurd and bloody religion that has ever infected the world.” – Voltaire
Voltaire also said within 100 years of his time, Christianity would be swept away from existence and pass into the obscurity of history. Fifty years after his death, the Geneva Bible Society used his house and printing press to produce stacks of Bibles. See article Why Joseph Smith hated the word of God.
Where are the revelations of the Mormon god today? He’s been awfully quiet…there hasn’t been a revelation from Salt Lake City since June 1, 1978 when blacks were allowed into the priesthood. From that time on…all we hear are crickets… (You’ll notice we have specific references.)
Furthermore, I don’t know of a single Christian who would refer to God as Ba’al. Do you?
Tomorrow we’ll be looking at the last part of Mr. Cannon’s speech which will be focusing on the Church’s persecution complex they burden themselves with.
