Today we’re examining the last segment of George Q. Cannon’s talk on the rejection of the Christian God and the anti-Christian remarks he made.
Journal of Discourses 24:185 – 186; “I want a God of that kind if I can find Him, and I thank God that I have found Him, and that He has revealed Himself in these last days, and has established His Church as He did in ancient days, and has endowed it with the same powers that the ancient church possessed, and it has to undergo the same trials and temptations and the same persecution that the ancient church did.”
After comparing the God of the Bible to Ba’al Mr. Cannon continued on with his duplicitous definition of the early church which only serves to confuse people more even further.
What purpose did this serve members of the Church?
How did this glorify God?
What new things did any member of the Church learn about Jesus?
Martyrs
“The blood of its members has flown. They have been slain for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, for claiming to be Prophets, for claiming to be apostles, for claiming to be servants of God, just the same as the ancient servants of God did.”
Assuming they have a typo in their statement about members’ blood, the real issue here is context and whether or not they’ve told the truth.
The Smith brothers didn’t die for the testimony of Jesus. They died in a gun battle while incarcerated. After they had been thrown in jail for treason, polygamy, and riot an LDS friend (Cyrus Wheelock) smuggled a gun into the facility and gave it to Joe Smith. When the Carthage Greys approached the jail and started shooting, Smith used his gun to shoot a few people and managed to kill two of them.
Does this sound like the work of a Christian who died as a martyr?
How did Smith die for the word of God when he rejected it?
Religious Tyranny
“We, to-day in these mountains are here because we have been driven out, not permitted to enjoy those blessings that as free men and free women, born free, we were justly entitled to—that is, the right to worship our God according to the dictates of our own consciences. We are therefore a standing protest against religious tyranny, and while God gives us breath, we shall always be found defending the right of every human being to worship his God or her God according to his or her conscience, without anything to molest or to make afraid, as long as in that worship they do not trespass upon the rights of their neighbors.” – George Q. Cannon, Salt Lake City, July 15, 1883
The US Government, then and now, allows people to worship any god they feel disposed to worship, albeit they’re making it more difficult for the Christians to worship the One True God nowadays…
That being said, Mr. Cannon has lied again. They weren’t kicked out of their communities based on worshiping the god they honored. They either fled prosecution for breaking the law, or were kicked out of their communities because of their atrocious behavior. No one in the mid 19th century could foresee America inhabiting half of the North American Continent. Getting them out of the local communities in Illinois and Missouri was seen as a sufficient fix.
Secondly, the comment that Mormons will defend the rights of others is laughable at best. He didn’t mention the militant police group (Danites) who massacred hundreds of people for not submitting to the Mormon god. Nor is there a memo on their website noting they funded Prop 8 to ban gay marriage. (It’s not that I approve of gay marriage, it’s the point they try to give an impression they don’t bother in agendas outside of their own interest when this simply isn’t true.)
The receiving end of religious tyranny is experienced by those who leave Mormonism. With the exception of a few family members, I’ve essentially been shunned and my story is nothing compared to others. People in here in America in the 21st century, have lost homes, jobs, and yes, even their entire families.
Summary
The LDS Church went out its way to denounce the body of Christ and their wholesale rejection of God is quite evident. They made a point of this with the following comments:
Christian Church is a Fake Christianity
Christian Church is Devoid of Power
Christianity Cannot Stand
Christianity Must Fall
God is Done Speaking
Christian God is Ba’al
Mormons are Martyrs
Religious Tyranny forced Mormons to Utah
Does it sound like they don’t have anything against Christians to you?
Come alongside us and pray that God will open their eyes and show them the truth!
With Love in Christ;
Michelle
