“My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.” Psalm 84:2
General Conference, ‘Moving Forward’, October 2020 “We are here on earth to be tested to see if we will choose to follow Jesus Christ, to repent regularly, to learn, and to progress. Our spirits long to progress.” — Russell Nelson
Revelation 4:11 “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”
Acts 17:28 “For in him we live, and move, and have our being…”
Ecclesiastes 12:13 “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”
GotQuestions.org provides an excellent article on why God created us, and what to do now that we’re here. Because there’s no reason to reinvent the wheel, as the saying goes, we’ve listed parts of their article below. Another verse that comes to mind is Ps. 42:1 ‘As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longeth after Thee’.
“Why am I here? To glorify God. Ultimately, God created us for His glory; our purpose is to glorify Him and, in this fallen world, to make Him known to others (Isaiah 43:7; Matthew 28:18–19). …”
“The general reason why we are here—to glorify God—extends to each of us specifically. Psalm 139:16 indicates that God’s purpose for us is as precise as it is personal: “You saw me before I was born. …”
“Why am I here? To be reconciled to God, who “commands all people everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). Jesus died in our place, taking the punishment for our sins upon Himself (Romans 5:6–8; 2 Corinthians 5:21). …”
“Why am I here? To serve the Lord and obey Him. … (Ecclesiastes 12:13, BSB). There is no higher purpose than being a servant of the King of the universe (see Psalm 84:10).”
“Why am I here? To prepare for eternity. …Part of why we’re here is to ready ourselves for the inevitable journey we must take after death: “People are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment” (Hebrews 9:27)…”
In knowing, glorifying, and serving the Lord, we have the answer to why we are here. …” Also see, ‘Why Did God Create Us?’, for further info.
As you can see in the Bible, God refutes Mr. Nelson’s comment about why we are here on every level. There’s nothing in His perfect word stating that our souls long to progress. That statement alone tells us they’ve not submitted to the Lord, but their own lustful determination of self-empowerment.
