General Conference, ‘Return and Receive’, April 2017 “He [Satan] uses loud voices—voices that seek to drown out the small and still voice of the Holy Spirit that can show us “all things” we should do to return and receive.
These voices belong to those who disregard gospel truth and who use the internet, social and print media, radio, television, and movies to present in an enticing way immorality…
These voices may also include well-intentioned individuals who are blinded by the secular philosophies of men and women and who seek to destroy the faith and divert the eternal focus of those who are simply trying to return to the presence of God…” — M. Russell Ballard
1 Kings 19:12 “And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.”
Deuteronomy 11:16 “Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them”.
If you type the phrase, ‘LDS Still Small Voice’, into your browser, you’ll get a list of 2.7 million sites to choose from. To be sure, this is a popular phrase in the Mormon vernacular. While its definition isn’t found in Mormon Doctrine, or the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, you’ll find it in their hymnbook, and many of their talks.
In essence, the Mormon ‘still small voice’, is another name for their holy ghost.
On the flipside of this, is what the Bible says. That same phrase is in the Bible just one time: 1 Kings 19:12. It’s used when God’s spirit speaks to Elijah as he hid in a cave after killing Jezebel’s prophets. You can read about this in 1 Kings 18:20-40.
Now with all that behind us, we can see how the Church has once again used just one verse from the Bible to build an entire doctrine.
Our reference today shows how they’ve misapplied this phrase, and told people to disregard any truth they might read outside their own sources. The alternative they provided is the still small voice of their version of God.
Pray for the Mormon people to listen to God who speaks to us through His Son, as it clearly says in Hebrews 1:1-2!
Hebrews 1:1-2 “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds”.
Also be sure to ask the Mormon for their opinion, and don’t forget to use demonstrative evidence as you do!
With Love in Christ;
Michelle
