February 16 – The Ungodly Racist Mormon Teachings. Acts 17:26 “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation”.

This behavior problem in Mormonism is one of the top reasons I left the Church. I’m not exactly ‘white and delightsome’, which to the Church, is a sign I didn’t side with Jesus in the pre-existence.
My heritage came with the heavy burden of shame and then all of a sudden when I was fifteen-years-old in 1978, I was told God miraculously liked me. The newspaper’s headline served as a heads up this god couldn’t be trusted. The day before I read the news, I hadn’t done anything differently to earn his favor, so why did he like me now?
It reminded me of when I was baptized. At seven-years old I was perfect. Right after I turned eight, somehow, I needed to be baptized and forgiven of sins. I hadn’t done anything differently the day before, but now the LDS god looked at me as imperfect.
Ask a Mormon what they think of God changing His mind, and what they think of the racist teachings that are still embedded in Mormon canon. See Moses 7:22.
Please, pray for those in the Church to stop and think about things like this and for Jesus to intervene!

“Negroes in this life are denied the priesthood; under no circumstances can they hold this delegation of authority from the Almighty (Abr. 1:20-7). The gospel message of salvation is not carried affirmatively to them (Moses 7:8).” Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 527, 1966.

Sadly racism in the church is alive and well today. On April 6 2022, Brad Wilcox a Professor of ancient scripture at BYU, gave a talk at the Alpine youth fireside. Mr. Wilcox says ” Brother Wilcox? What? Brigham Young was a jerk? Members of the church were prejudice? … Maybe we’re asking the wrong question.
Maybe instead of saying, ” why did the blacks have to wait until 1978?” Maybe what we should be asking is “why did the whites and other races have to wait until 1829?” 1’829 they waited”.
Brad Wilcox has since issued two apologies. But I’m hard pressed to believe he is sincere. Only because he gave an almost identical speech at a Georgia youth fireside back in 2020. Which means the leaders didn’t have a problem with his racist rhetoric, or he would have been counciled for saying what he said. It’s all over YouTube if you want to see the full speech.
Thanks for sharing a bit of your story. I remember being thrilled that the prophet finally had word we didn’t have to practice discrimination against the not so ‘white and delightsome’ of the world. I am ashamed it didn’t occur to me to be annoyed with the apparent sham. I’m quite sure now that tax advantages for those who didn’t practice bigotry was a motivating factor for this miraculous change.
Sorry…the talk was given Feb.6, 2022 not April.
