‘Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.’ Matthew 24:35
Journal of Discourses 26:115-116 “The Scriptures give an account simply of the woman Eve; declaring that this name was given her of Adam, because she was “the mother of all living;” but outside of biblical record there has been handed down from time immemorial the idea that Adam had two wives, the narrators go so far, or rather so near perfecting the tradition so as to give their names, Lilith being said to be the name of one as Eve was the name of the other, and while it may be difficult to harmonize all the Rabbinical and Talmudic versions of this matter, it is said that Joseph Smith the Prophet taught that Adam had two wives.” — H. W. Naisbitt, delivered in the Tabernacle, Salt Lake City, Sunday Afternoon, March 8, 1885.
Genesis 3:20 “And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.”
The other day I saw the LDS reference above and didn’t think anything of it until I researched the name Lilith. If you’re unaware of who this character is you’re not alone.
Apparently, Joe Smith taught that Adam was a polygamist – see Journal of Discourses 1:50 for an example where Brigham referred to Adam having more than one wife.
Supposedly one of these other wives was Lilith who happened to be an evilly disposed mythological woman who didn’t like being told what to do.
In her rebellion she had an affair with Satan and produced a race of evil creatures.
Now regardless of what Joe Smith may have taught it’s unbiblical to its very core.
1.There’s nothing in the Bible that remotely suggests such nonsense.
2.This LDS teaching was another ruse to confuse. Their lies do nothing take attention away from truth.
3.The other thing this lie produced was to show another layer of Smith’s deceitful heart.
For more info on this Lilith thing, see GotQuestions.org.
While the average member of the Church wouldn’t be aware of this particular reference, it’s a good example of how their lies morph themselves into other lies that are taught today.
If you’re LDS please know that we don’t publish these things to humiliate you or bash the Church. We do this to provide info on the truth because we care deeply for the welfare of your soul and want for all Mormons to come to a saving knowledge of Christ Jesus and Him crucified.
With Love in Christ —
Michelle
[…] Adam’s Two Wives […]
Then why does the Bible say the TWO shall become one?
Good point!
