D&C 137:7 “Thus came the voice of the Lord unto me, saying: All who have died without a knowledge of this gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the celestial kingdom of God”.
Today we’re wondering why temple work is done for those who are already in the Celestial Kingdom?
I can’t count the number of times I performed the ritual of baptisms for the dead as a teen.
As an active LDS kid growing up in Utah Mormonism, I dutifully fulfilled the ungodly ritual without questioning anything I was doing, or what the Church expected of me. After being found worthy, I was issued the much-coveted slip of paper known as a temple recommend and followed my leaders into the building.
I don’t recall the names of those I was baptized for, nor was I given info on when or where they lived. I didn’t know where the Church got their names from, nor did I even think to ask. I also wasn’t aware of Joe Smith’s prophecy in the LDS reference above.
What I do know is that I visited the Ogden Temple at least three times, and each time I was baptized for dozens of people.
The most important thing I was unaware of is what the Lord declared in His word.
2 Corinthians 6:2 “(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)”
1 Corinthians 15:29 “Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?”
If you’re LDS we pray you’ll compare what the Lord has said with the Church’s doctrines, in addition to comparing the Church’s own doctrines against itself.
