Life after Death

Gospel Principles, pg 241; “What happens to us after we die?  Heavenly Father prepared a plan for our salvation. As part of this plan, He sent us from His presence to live on earth and receive mortal bodies of flesh and blood. Eventually our mortal bodies will die, and our spirits will go to the spirit world. The spirit world is a place of waiting, working, learning, and, for the righteous, resting from care and sorrow. Our spirits will live there until we are ready for our resurrection. Then our mortal bodies will once more unite with our spirits, and we will receive the degree of glory we have prepared for.”

Saviors on Mount Zion

Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith, Chapter 41: pg. 468-478; “We become saviors on Mount Zion by performing sacred ordinances for the dead “But how are they to become saviors on Mount Zion? By building their temples, erecting their baptismal fonts, and going forth and receiving all the ordinances, baptisms, confirmations, washings, anointings, ordinations and sealing powers upon their heads, in behalf of all their progenitors who are dead, and redeem them that they may come forth in the first resurrection and be exalted to thrones of glory with them.”

Mormon Dilemma 47

This time we’re looking at the contradiction between:

D&C 124:29-30; For a baptismal font there is not upon the earth, that they, my saints, may be baptized for those who are dead—For this ordinance belongeth to my house, and cannot be acceptable to me, only in the days of your poverty, wherein ye are not able to build a house unto me.

and

2 Nephi 9:38; “And, in fine, wo unto all those who die in their sins; for they shall return to God, and behold his face, and remain in their sins.

Along with:

1 Cor. 15:29; Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

Easter Essays

This had to be one of the most blessed and exciting Holy Week and Easter celebrations I’ve experienced since I was saved on Palm Sunday in 1993. I had the opportunity to mentor several brand new Christian ex-Mormons. It was completed in a hap-hazard way, but it gave me much insight for next year. The blessing was in seeing and witnessing via e-mail and phone how wonderful their lives are now that they are saved.

April 13 – 1 Cor. 15:16, 29; “For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:  Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? Why are they then baptized for the dead?”

December 26 –  1 Corinthians 1:18; “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”

_____

This verse has always been my call to arms so to speak.  The Mormon cannot stand talking about the cross so the more I engage them in conversation, the more I bring up the subject of the cross.  I like to show them this verse and then 1 Cor. 15:1-5; they soon see they are without excuse and besides once again, it gives them something to think about.

If you’re a Christian you worship a God not confined to a man made grave.  You worship a God who raised His dead Son and brought Him back to life.

There are so many biblical references to sacrifices needing to be made for man’s sin and each of them are a foreshadowing of what was to come through God’s own sacrifice of His Son.  Why would the Garden of Gethsemane qualify?  And where in scripture can we see that the Garden of Gethsemane would fulfill the sacrifice God demanded for righteousness?  These are the questions I would ask the Mormon.

_____

“GREATEST SUFFERING WAS IN GETHSEMANE. We speak of the passion of Jesus Christ. A great many people have an idea that when he was on the cross, and nails were driven into his hands and feet, that was his great suffering. His great suffering was before he ever was placed upon the cross. It was in the Garden of Gethsemane that the blood oozed from the pores of his body: “Which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit-and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink,” That was not when he was on the cross; that was in the garden. That is where he bled from every pore in his body.”  Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 3 vols. 1: 130.

December 14 – Revelation 1:18; “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”

_____

The resurrected Jesus is where I personally hold my hope.  The God I worship raised His Son from the dead and is in full control and has all the power.  The Mormons say they worship God and Jesus; however they pay an unholy and unwarranted homage to Joseph Smith by believing the teachings he spewed forth from his mouth.  You can stand next to his grave in Carthage, Illinois where he is still there.  Joseph “worked to go to the celestial kingdom”, something that doesn’t exist.  Compare that with Jesus who paid the ultimate price for our freedom!

_____

“Highest among the kingdoms of glory hereafter is the celestial kingdom. It is the kingdom of God, the glory thereof being typified by the sun in the firmament.  An inheritance in this glorious kingdom is gained by complete obedience to gospel or celestial law. (D. & C. 88:16-32.)”  Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, 116.
