In the early days of Mormonism Joseph Smith taught and members were firm believers that Jehovah was none other than God the Father. As time waned on, the theory of Jesus being Jehovah in the Old Testament took hold in the early twentieth century.
The following is from a written prayer of Harvey Whitlock who was asking to be readmitted into the Church. Smith approved his reinstatement and the prayer. Notice how he refers to Jehovah. It was November 15, 1835.
History of the Church 2:314; “…O! Thou great omnipotent and omnipresent Jehovah…Speak once more, make known Thy will concerning me; which favors I ask in the name of the Son of God. Amen.”
Now we see another instance where the Church testified of their belief that Jehovah was God and Jesus is the Son of God.
Times & Seasons, Vol. 3, No. 1, November 1, 1841, pg 578; “We believe in God the Father, who is the great Jehovah and head of all things, and that Christ is the Son of God…”
And again we read Joseph Smith’s own words proclaiming Jehovah is God the Father. It was January 1841.
History of the Church 4:256; “The Lord (Jehovah) hath spoken through Isaiah (13:1), saying, “Behold my servant whom I uphold—mine elect in whom my soul delighteth;” evidently referring to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, chosen, or elected by the Father…”
In 1915 the Mormon apostle James Talmage wrote Jesus the Christ. In this 800+ page doctrinal thesis of sorts, Talmage helped set the Church in a new direction on the definition of Jesus and his identity in the godhead of Mormonism. In an attempt to eradicate Brigham Young’s earlier teachings on the Adam-God theory, they set into motion how Mormons today look at Jesus.
Jesus the Christ, pg 35; “Jesus of Nazareth, who in solemn testimony to the Jews declared Himself the I Am or Jehovah…”
Not only has the Church uttered false prophecies about the identity of Jesus, they’ve also qualified as false teachers by contradicting themselves.
Ask the next Mormon you see what their thoughts are on these major changes in their church. And whatever you do, don’t forget to share the following verses with them in addition to your own favorites!
Isaiah 9:6; “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
John 8:56-59; “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.”
Exodus 3:14; “And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.”
Jesus Christ is God. If your not a Mormon then you can’t really argue about if he is God the Son or God the Father because to you He is One and the Same. However just so you know, Jesus is God. period. God is God. Period. The Holy Ghost is also God. Period . If you don’t understand that then rest is pointless.
