Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 3, No. 21, November 1, 1868, pg 165; “We do not believe in the permanency of a race descended from people so wide apart as the Anglo-Saxon and Negro. In fact we believe it to be a great sin in the eyes of our Heavenly Father for a white person to marry a black one. And further, that it is a proof of the mercy of God that no such race appear to be able to continue for many generations.”
Exodus 34:12-14; “Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee: 13 But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves: 14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”
Oh how this breaks my heart. Today you’ll see many LDS who say they’re not racist while their behavior says otherwise. There’s no leader in Mormonism, past or present, who has officially denounced teachings such as this one today.
They’ve come out and said “forget everything we’ve said in the past”; however, this isn’t an apology. It’s also not repenting before God or denouncing the past teachings of racism. If they were truly sorrowful for what they’ve done their canon would reflect that, but it doesn’t. As a matter of fact their racist theology is still intact and emblazoned in each and every Book of Mormon and Book of Abraham even today.
God didn’t condemn interracial marriages. but He did warn us about being unequally yoked with unbelievers – 2 Corinthians 6:14!
We even see the Lord’s true mercy upon nations other than Israel when He told the Israelites that if a foreigner comesto their home and they observed the Law then they were to consider him as a native – Exodus 12:48. How is that a sign that God doesn’t approve of mixed marriages?
Taking people (unbelievers) into your home or heart spiritually speaking is being unequally yoked and God knows how this can cause someone to sin – we only have to see the example of Solomon for that one.
Again, with God there is no variance or changing as He’s the same at the beginning of the Bible as He is at the end! There is neither Jew nor Greek…Did my grandmother commit a sin by marrying a white American?
After all she was black Welsh and not very “white and delightsome”.
Are Mormons today forbidden from marrying outside their race? If so, then why and if not, why not?
