Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 35, December 15, 1900, No. 24, p. 823Angels obeyed Gospel. We think angels are very holy beings. How did they become holy? How can they dwell in the presence of God? They have become holy through obeying that Gospel which is taught to us. Every child who obeys that Gospel can become an angel in character and disposition. There was a time when angels were mortal as we are, and they were tempted as we are. But they resisted temptation. By the aid of God’s Holy Spirit they conquered their evil inclinations. They were born again and continued to resist evil until they became angels.” — George Q. Cannon, Gospel Truth: Discourses and Writings of President George Q. Cannon, selected, arranged, and edited by Jerreld L. Newquist [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1987], 141.) (more…)

earthJuvenile Instructor, v. 46, No. 4, April 1911, pp. 208-209; “There are speculations which touch the origin of life and the relationship of God to his children. In a very limited degree that relationship has been defined by revelation, and until we receive more light upon the subject we deem it best to refrain from the discussion of certain philosophical [not scientific] theories…. Some of our teachers are anxious to explain how much of the theory of evolution… is true, and what is false, but that only leaves their students in an unsettled frame of mind. They are not old enough and learned enough to discriminate, or put proper limitations upon a theory which we believe is more or less a fallacy. In reaching the conclusion that evolution would be best left out of discussions in our Church schools we are deciding a question of propriety and are not undertaking to say how much of evolution is true, or how much is false…. The Church itself has no philosophy about the modus operandi employed by the Lord in His creation of the world, and much of the talk therefore about the philosophy of Mormonism is altogether misleading.” – Joseph F. Smith

The Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 3Mormon Decisions 100, No. 22, November 15, 1895, pp 700-701; “Adam’s Altar…I have visited many times…Joseph said, “That altar was built by our Father Adam and there he offered sacrifice.”…according to the words of the Prophet Joseph, mankind in that age continued to emigrate eastwardly until they reached the country on or near the Atlantic coast; and that in or near Carolina Noah built his remarkable ship, in which he, his family, and all kinds of animals lived a few days over one year without coming out of it…The travels of this Church have been from the very beginning the reverse direction from the “course of empire”…According to the Bible and the words of Joseph Smith, we have emigrated in exactly a reverse course also from the first people on the earth. What direction will we travel next if we ever emigrate?” – Oliver B. Huntington

salt lake mormon temple 2Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 3, No. 20, October 15, 1868, pg 156-157; “The Negro Race. We understand that when God made man in his own image and pronounced him very good, that he made him white. We have no record of any of God’s favored servants being a black race. All His prophets and apostles belonged to the most handsome race on the face f the earth – Israel, who still, as represented in the scattered tribe of Judah, bear the impress of their former beauty. In this race was born His Son Jesus, who, we are told was very lovely, and “in the express image of his Father’s person,” and every angel who ever brought a message of God’s mercy to man was beautiful to look upon, clad in the purest white and with a countenance bright as the noonday sun.

salt lake mormon temple 2Juvenile Instructor, Vol. 3, No. 21, November 1, 1868, pg 165; “We do not believe in the permanency of a race descended from people so wide apart as the Anglo-Saxon and Negro. In fact we believe it to be a great sin in the eyes of our Heavenly Father for a white person to marry a black one. And further, that it is a proof of the mercy of God that no such race appear to be able to continue for many generations.”
