Today while retrieving info for the latest LDS General Conference I noticed an ominous article on the sidebar of the Church’s front page of their website. It said;
So I moseyed on over to have a look-see. My thought? Oh dear.
Here in part is what Mr. D. Todd Christofferson had to say about the all important Mr. Joseph Smith;
“Without his commission from the Father and the Son, without his priesthood ordinations and the keys he received at the hands of duly appointed heavenly messengers, without the fulness of the gospel restored through his visions and revelations and his translations of the Book of Mormon and the Bible, what we would have is something much less than true Christianity.””
The truth is this:
1. God doesn’t need you or me or Joseph Smith. God took care of all the “planning” in advance and because He is sovereign (meaning he holds supreme power, rank and authority) no one else has been given a “commission” to perform a complete overhaul of His “plan”.
2. The gospel was already fulfilled in Christ.
Ephesians 2:12-13; “That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.”
You’ll notice that in Paul’s words we read the singular word “promise”. It’s not promises; rather, it says a promise and that promise was fulfilled in Christ Jesus! Mr. Christofferson went on…
““Our study of the Prophet’s life and ministry are more than an intellectual exercise to satisfy curiosity,” he said. “Insofar as we can, we want to know what he knew; we want to understand what he understood; we want to draw near to God as he did. …
“The expanding access we enjoy to the Prophet’s work and teachings fills previous voids in our knowledge, it confirms some things we already knew or thought, and it supplies answers to questions we might have had.””
Why wouldn’t you want to know what Jesus said and taught? One of the most revealing things Jesus said was;
Luke 8:16-17; “No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. 17 For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither anything hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.”
Studying history can be a good thing; however, when you replace Jesus with a mere man it becomes dangerous. Whom are you following and placing your trust in at that point? Is it Jesus or Joseph?
Please, if you’re LDS we ask that you study the life and times of Jesus. The information you need has already been supplied through the Bible for you! God promised a Redeemer would be sent for Israel and He did that so take it a step further – He’s supplied the Bible for you to know Him. He promised us through Isaiah His word would stand forever and here it is today!
Isaiah 40:8; “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”
Know that we’re praying for you and if you have questions or would like prayer we’re here!
With Love in Christ;
Michelle
