The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, p. 7; “Thus the testimonies of appointed witnesses leave no question as to the paternity of Jesus Christ. God was the Father of Jesus’ mortal tabernacle, and Mary, a mortal woman, was His mother. He is therefore the only person born who rightfully deserved the title “the Only Begotten Son of God.” (Come unto Christ, pp. 2-3.)” – Ezra Taft Benson
Matthew 10:33; “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.”
Walt Whitman once said ‘re-examine all that you have been told . . . dismiss that which insults your soul’. Tragically, Mormon canon lends itself to the same ideals Whitman held onto. The gospel is a nasty story for those who choose to switch things around, or worse yet, totally reject what God has revealed. Comparatively speaking, the nastier story is couched in the annals of Mormon teachings from ungodly men who have bastardized God’s Son.
Years ago I found myself walking home from a Sunday school class when I was around 14-15 years old. I had just overheard classmates and a teacher remark that I was worshiping a different Jesus. Stunned by their remarks, I turned around in the hallway and left.
My walk home didn’t take long, maybe 10 minutes tops, but to this day forty years later it was one of the most pivotal and important walks of my entire life.
On that walk home I kept thinking of the scripture I had read the night before my class; Matthew 16:16 – ‘thou art the Christ’. I wasn’t totally sure what the word Christ meant, but I knew enough that Peter’s words set Jesus apart from all other men.
At the time I knew hundreds of people, but didn’t know a single Christian and yet God spoke to me through His word. His Holy Spirit has the power to permeate even the darkest of places and I found this out for myself in Utah in the 1970’s.
Will you dismiss parts of the gospel when it cramps your style? I beg of you to rethink what Jesus said in Matthew!
