Today we’re looking at the real meaning of a ‘revelation’ Joe Smith pronounced upon Martin Harris, one of the original 3 BoM Witnesses. I use the word ‘pronounced’ because it was more like a curse put on Harris, if he didn’t adhere to the demands of Smith’s god.

“A commandment of God and not of man to you.” Prophecy from Joseph Smith meant for Martin Harris, March, 1830.

You can find two versions of this – one in the Book of Commandments Chapter XVI, the other in Doctrine and Covenants Section 19. The Church had to rewrite the BoC when their printing press was burned down by the locals in July 1833. As ‘luck’ would have it, two young sisters managed to salvage some of the writings during the mêlée. You can read more on that story in our article The True Story of Mary Rollins Lightner.

Mormon Decisions 10An Address to all Believers in Christ, p 61; “When it became generally known that these important changes had been made in the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, many of the brethren objected seriously to it, but they did not want to say much for the sake of peace, as it was Brother Joseph and the leaders who did it. The majority of the members – poor weak souls – thought that anything Brother Joseph would do, must be all right; so in their blindness of heart, trusting in an arm of flesh, they looked over it and were led into error.” – David Whitmer

The Book of Commandments and the Doctrine and Covenants Compared

Today’s dilemma is a side by side example of changes made when the Church rewrote the Book of Commandments and renamed it the Doctrine and Covenants.  This particular revelation was given by Joseph Smith to Oliver Cowdery in April 1829.  Cowdery, hoping God would allow him to be the scribe for Smith, asked Smith if God had any special message for him personally.
