Posts Tagged ‘Martin Harris’

Today we’re looking at the real meaning of a ‘revelation’ Joe Smith pronounced upon Martin Harris, one of the original 3 BoM Witnesses. I use the word ‘pronounced’ because it was more like a curse put on Harris, if he didn’t adhere to the demands of Smith’s god.

“A commandment of God and not of man to you.” Prophecy from Joseph Smith meant for Martin Harris, March, 1830.

You can find two versions of this – one in the Book of Commandments Chapter XVI, the other in Doctrine and Covenants Section 19. The Church had to rewrite the BoC when their printing press was burned down by the locals in July 1833. As ‘luck’ would have it, two young sisters managed to salvage some of the writings during the mêlée. You can read more on that story in our article The True Story of Mary Rollins Lightner.

Below is a side-by-side comparison from both writings. For the sake of brevity, we’ve only listed the relevant verses; to read them in full, see links above. (more…)

Millennial Star 8:124-128 ~ “One of the witnesses to the Book of Mormon, yielded to the spirit and temptation of the devil a number of years ago – turned against Joseph Smith and became his bitter enemy. He was filled with the rage and madness of a demon. One day he would be one thing, and another day another thing. He soon became partially deranged or shattered, as many believed, flying from one thing to another…In one of his fits of monomania, he went and joined the ‘Shakers’ or followers of Anna Lee…but since Strang has made his entry…Martin leaves the ‘Shakers,’ whom he knows to be right…and joins Strang…We understand that he is appointed a mission to this country…if the Saints wish to know what the Lord hath said to him they may turn to…the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, and the person there called a “wicked man” is no other than Martin Harris….” ~ John Taylor, November 15, 1846 (more…)

salt lake mormon temple 2The spiritual climate of early America was dominated by the palpable urgency of men and women alike looking to hear from God through dreams they would interpret as personal revelations. As a result of the activities, it didn’t take a lot of coaxing to encourage many to try their hand at creating new churches.

This being said, Joe Smith wasn’t the only false prophet roaming upstate NewMartin Harris (1) York’s landscape in the early 19th century. The eastern seaboard had already seen its fair share of ne-er-do-wells with the likes of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688–1772) from Quincy, MA,  and a small sect of the Shakers who settled in the Groveland Shaker Village, in Groveland, NY c. 1826. Their communal living system just so happened to be 62 miles southwest of Palmyra, NY, the birthplace of Mormonism itself.

Proverbs 10:9; “He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.”

Because nothing in Mormonism goes off without a hitch, so it is with this little soirée…

Mormonism Unvailed ED HoweJoseph Smith, Jr., the first prophet of Mormonism, was a charismatic type of guy. He found extra time in his day to ensure others heard about the miraculous translations he produced from the stuff he kept digging out of the ground. Although he had no formal education, when it came to Mormonism’s foundation (Book of Mormon), he had enough wherewithal to know his main attraction might receive more attention with the endorsement from those who did.

Three Witnesses TestimonyWhenever someone examines the testimony of the three Book of Mormon witnesses, the first thought one might have is how it comes across as sounding very official with their use of the phrase, ‘be it known’.

In my personal experience with Mormonism, I elevated these men, making them superior to myself, and believed they were impeachable because of their supposed status.

Mormon Decisions 10The Telegraph (Painesville, OH), March 15, 1831, v. 2, no. 39; “Martin Harris, another chief of the Mormon impostors, arrived here last Saturday from the bible quarry in New York. He immediately planted himself in the bar-room of the hotel, where he soon commenced reading and explaining the Mormon hoax, and all the dark passages from Genesis to Revelations…

salt lake mormon temple 2Martin Harris, quoted in Mormonism Unvailed, 1834, p 14; “Within four years from September 1832, there will not be one wicked person left in the United States; that the righteous will be gathered to Zion (Missouri,) and that there will be no President over these United States at that time…. I do hereby assert and declare that in four years from the date thereof [1832], every sectarian and religious denomination in the United States, shall be broken down, and every Christian shall be gathered unto the Mormonites, and the rest of the human race shall perish.” – E.D. Millennial Star, Vol. 44, NMormon Decisions 10o. 6, February 6, 1882, pp 86-87; “By aid of the Seer Stone, sentences would appear and were read by the Prophet and written by Martin, and when finished he would say ‘written;’ and if correctly written, the sentence would disappear and another appear in its place; but if not written correctly it remained until corrected, so that the translation was just as it was engraven on the plates, precisely in the language then used” – Edward Stevenson

D&C 3:1; “The works, and the designs, and the purposes of God cannot be frustrated, neither can they come to naught.”

Martin Harris (1)As I’ve stated countless times before, there’s a lot to learn about Mormonism once you leave the fold. I was a sixth generation Mormon from Utah no less and thought I had a pretty good handle on the history of my beloved heritage.  I’ve never been so wrong in my life!

Today we’re looking at one of the events in Mormonism that brings up more questions than answers. The infamous story of the ‘lost 116 pages to the BoM’ sits in the hallways of Mormon history waiting its turn to be exposed for the lie that it is.

A cursory glance at the subject matter doesn’t reveal the underhanded fallacious habits of Joseph Smith or what he did to pull this one out of his magic hat. The problem here is the same as it is with everything in Mormonism. The victims, if you will, are clueless as to what’s in the dark closets of their church. I know this for certain because I used to be one of them.

Pray with us that they will open their eyes and accept the truth that God is laying out for them to see!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle

Mormon Decisions 10Today we’re asking a few questions about the Book of Mormon witnesses! The BoM is the keystone of Mormonism and should be studied in-depth by those claiming that it’s the word of God.

Many times we’ve found that the majority of Mormons don’t know what’s in their beloved canon and have no idea the BoM doesn’t contain major doctrines of Mormonism. Making matters worse, they don’t have a solid understanding about the witnesses to the Book of Mormon.

Mormon Decisions 10History of the Church 3:228; “This poor man who professes to be much of a prophet, has no other dumb *** to ride but David Whitmer, to forbid his madness when he goes up to curse Israel; and this *** not being of the same kind as Balaam’s, therefore, the angel notwithstanding appeared unto him, yet he could not penetrate his understanding sufficiently, but that he prays out cursings instead of blessings. Poor ***!” – December 16, 1838
