Book of Mormon: Reformed Egyptian & Hebrew Changed, Plates too Small, but All is Inspired & God will Figure it Out

Discourses of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 244 “On the 523rd page of the fourth edition, it reads: “And now, behold we have written this record according to our knowledge in the characters which are called among us the Reformed Egyptian, being handed down and altered by us, according to our manner of speech; and if our plates had been sufficiently large, we should have written in Hebrew; but the Hebrew hath been altered by us also; and if we could have written in Hebrew, behold, ye would have had no imperfection in our record, but the Lord knoweth the things which we have written, and also that none other people knoweth our language; therefore he hath prepared means for the interpretation thereof.””

Because nothing in Mormonism goes off without a hitch, so it is with this little soirée…

Mormonism Unvailed ED HoweJoseph Smith, Jr., the first prophet of Mormonism, was a charismatic type of guy. He found extra time in his day to ensure others heard about the miraculous translations he produced from the stuff he kept digging out of the ground. Although he had no formal education, when it came to Mormonism’s foundation (Book of Mormon), he had enough wherewithal to know his main attraction might receive more attention with the endorsement from those who did.

bom.jpgI learned years ago not to let anything surprise me when it comes to Mormonism, although I do keep the door open for the occasional use of an eye-roll. Here today we have such a case with this topic. Just when I thought I had exhausted all the grammar problems in the BoM, I discovered another.

Summary of the Book of Mormon

Mormon Decisions 10Mormon 9:31-33; “Condemn me not because of mine imperfection, neither my father, because of his imperfection, neither them who have written before him; but rather give thanks unto God that he hath made manifest unto you our imperfections, that ye may learn to be more wise than we have been. 32 And now, behold, we have written this record according to our knowledge, in the characters which are called among us the reformed Egyptian, being handed down and altered by us, according to our manner of speech. 33 And if our plates had been sufficiently large we should have written in Hebrew; but the Hebrew hath been altered by us also; and if we could have written in Hebrew, behold, ye would have had no imperfection in our record.”

Mosiah 8:9, 13; “And for a testimony that the things that they had said are true they have brought twenty-four plates which are filled with engravings, and they are of pure gold. 13 Now Ammon said unto him: I can assuredly tell thee, O king, of a man that can translate the records; for he has wherewith that he can look, and translate all records that are of ancient date; and it is a gift from God. And the things are called interpreters, and no man can look in them except he be commanded, lest he should look for that he ought not and he should perish. And whosoever is commanded to look in them, the same is called seer.”

Translation Problems in Book of Abraham

salt lake mormon temple 2Ensign, “I’ve Got a Question”, July 1988, pg 51; “Why doesn’t the translation of the Egyptian papyri found in 1967 match the text of the Book of Abraham in the Pearl of Great Price?

The papyri in question are a part of the collection of Egyptian mummies and papyri that the Prophet Joseph Smith bought from Michael Chandler in 1835. After the Prophet’s death, the papyri were lost to the Church. But in 1966, Dr. Aziz S. Atiya, a professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Utah, discovered some twenty-two separate papyri fragments in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, which were clearly part of Joseph Smith’s original collection.

Anthon Transcript

Mormon Decisions 10Joseph Smith History 1:64-65; “”I went to the city of New York, and presented the characters which had been translated, with the translation thereof, to Professor Charles Anthon, a gentleman celebrated for his literary attainments. Professor Anthon stated that the translation was correct, more so than any he had before seen translated from the Egyptian. I then showed him those which were not yet translated, and he said that they were Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic; and he said they were true characters. He gave me a certificate, certifying to the people of Palmyra that they were true characters, and that the translation of such of them as had been translated was also correct. I took the certificate and put it into my pocket, and was just leaving the house, when Mr. Anthon called me back, and asked me how the young man found out that there were gold plates in the place where he found them. I answered that an angel of God had revealed it unto him.

The Language of the Egyptians

Language Problems in the Book of Mormon

This time around we’re looking at the false prophecy of Joseph Smith when he emphatically declared and proclaimed that there were no Greek or Latin words on the plates from where he got the information to produce the Book of Mormon.
