1 Corinthians 15:1-4 “Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures”.

In the December 2016 issue of Ensign, LDS Apostle Russell Ballard wrote in an article on how times have changed, and so must the teaching methods of the Church. Necessitating the change, he said, is the way people retrieve info nowadays.

The internet has changed everything, for all of  us, that is for sure. No longer are we placing books on hold at the library to Xerox an obscure reference to something we’re studying. Nor are we having to reserve a section of our homes for oversized dictionaries, and outdated sets of Encyclopedias. All one has to do now is boot up a 3×5” phone, and your eyeballs are beholding everything you need to know. Who knew, right?

Well, this is the dilemma the LDS Church has found themselves in today. Try as they might, they can no longer get away with telling members in a class ‘Oh, we’ll find out about that someday’.

‘Someday’ has arrived.

Philippians 4:8; “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

John D Lee sitting on his coffin before executionToday I received my daily e-mail from TodayinMormonHistory.com which served as another reminder of why I left the Church.

In the annals of LDS history lies a treasure trove of sermons the Church would love to have either disappear, or stay in the dark closet from which they were birthed. For the sake of truth, we’re pulling them from their dusty shelves as a grim reminder this church isn’t the family-oriented organization as seen on t.v.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures”.

byu_studiesIn all the years I’ve dealt with Mormonism, one important thing I’ve learned is that many crucial elements needed to take place in order for the Church to be where it is now. Our lesson today shows four key pieces of how this happened.

The other day I came upon an article that helped add to the dimension of how Mormonism came to be. The article, written by Gordon Irving, appeared in the 1973 BYU Studies papers, and to say it was revealing would be a gross understatement! Mr. Irving outlined four ‘polemic tools’ (as he phrased it) Mormons used to entice Christians away from the body of Christ.

Joseph Smith General of NauvooJournal of Discourses 2:186; “I will take the Government of the United States, and the laws of Missouri and Illinois, from the year 1833 to 1845, and if they had been carried out according to their letter and spirit, they would have strung up the murderers and mobocrats who illegally and unrighteously killed, plundered, harassed, and expelled us. I will tell you how much I love those characters. If they had any respect to their own welfare, they would come forth and say, whether Joseph Smith was a Prophet or not, “We shed his blood, and now let us atone for it;” and they would be willing to have their heads chopped off, that their blood might run upon the ground, and the smoke of it rise before the Lord as an incense for their sins. I love them that much. But if the Lord wishes them to live and foam out their sins before all men and women, it is all right, I care not where they go, or what they do.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, February 18, 1855

February 28 – Matthew 16:13-16; “When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?  And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptists: some, Elias; and other, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.  He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?  And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God”.

There have been and will continue to be many who call themselves “The Christ” or the only path to salvation.  In today’s age, we see Mohammed, the Jehovah Witnesses, and here we have the Mormon Church.  Make sure you know whom Jesus Christ is and watch out for the wolves in sheep’s clothing.

Jedidiah M. Grant said in Journal of Discourses, Vol. 1. pp. 345-46; “The grand reason of the burst of public sentiment in anathemas upon Christ and his disciples, causing his crucifixion, was evidently based upon polygamy, according to the testimony of the philosophers who rose in that age.  A belief in the doctrine of a plurality of wives caused the persecution of Jesus and his followers.  We might almost think that they [Jesus and his followers] were Mormons.”

foundationsConvince us of our errors of doctrine, if we have any, by reason, by logical arguments, or by the word of God, and we will be ever grateful for the information, and you will ever have the pleasing reflection that you have been instruments in the hands of God of redeeming your fellow beings from the darkness which you may see enveloping their minds.” – The Seer, pgs. 15-16, Orson Pratt, apostle

Boyd K. Packer, “The Mantle is Far, Far Greater Than the Intellect”, 1981, BYU Studies, Vol. 21, No. 3, pp. 259-271; “Church history can be so interesting and so inspiring as to be a very powerful tool indeed for building faith. If not properly written or properly taught, it may be a faith destroyer… “There is a temptation for the writer or the teacher of Church history to want to tell everything, whether it is worthy or faith promoting or not…Some things that are true are not very useful.

Have you ever heard of Carfax?  It’s a cool little concept.  You can get a report on any car you’d like to buy and in that report is all the information you’d ever want or need to know about that particular car.  It’ll even tell you how many times the oil was changed and when, the number of previous owners, if it was a lease or loan, etc., the list just keeps going.  You’ll have no doubts or worries about the history of the car you have your sights on.  If you know what you’re looking for, the writings of the Mormon Church are like Carfax in many ways.
