The Learning of Eternal Truths

Brigham Young University–Idaho Devotional

February 22, 2005

“I ask that the Spirit of the Lord will be upon us today so that you and I might learn together. President Marion G. Romney once remarked that speakers, under the influence of the Holy Ghost might also learn, I quote, I always know when I am speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost because I always learn something from what I’ve said” (quoted in Boyd K. Packer, Teach Ye Diligently, 1975, 304).” – Dale E. Miller [emp. mine]

Philippians 3:10; “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death”.

In finishing up our mini-series on Truman Madsen’s devotional speech, I was struck today at the overwhelming lack of spiritual growth in Mormonism. The things Mr. Madsen said to these young people in 2004, are the same things Joseph Smith, and Brigham Young were saying 180 years ago.

There’s no evidence of spiritual maturation, neither is there anything suggesting they had learned something new about God, or Jesus, or the Holy Spirit since 1830. They’re fixated on two things; sex and godhood. And as far as Mormonism is concerned, those two things are inseparable.

As heartbreaking as it is, those two topics overshadow all other things pertaining to Mormons as a people group.

2 Corinthians 10:5; “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ”.

Today we’re looking at the second of a three part 2004 devotional talk Truman Madsen delivered to students at BYU-Idaho, Foundation of Temple Worship, Because this talk is considered one of their classic speeches, Mormons still refer to it today. We’re praying they’ll stop and think about what he said, and compare it to what the Lord Jesus says, so here we go! To read the talk in full, see link provided above.

Mr. Madsen used the first few letters of the alphabet to remind students of the importance in visiting the temple regularly. The letter ‘C’, he said, is for covenants, and covenant-making. Telling students that the earlier they participate, and the more they attend, the more God will bless them is unbiblical to the core. In other words, the wider you open that pocketbook…

Ephesians 4:29; “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”

On October 26, 2004 Truman Madsen, Emeritus BYU Professor, was the keynote speaker at one of BYU’s devotionals in Idaho. The name of his talk was ‘The Foundation of Temple Worship’.

Beginning today and for the next few days, we’re taking a look at the significant comments made in this speech.

2 Corinthians 6:17 “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you”.

Elder David A. Bednar Visits Cebu Saints; “…whenever Satan knows that a temple is being built he launches massive attacks to individuals and families to destroy homes. Have you ever wondered why in the last 10 years there has been a huge decline on family values? It’s because in the last 10 years more than 60 temples were built.”

Discourses of Brigham Young, selected and arranged by John A. Widtsoe [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1954], 593; “The names of every son and daughter of Adam are already written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Is there ever a time when they will be taken out of it? Yes, when they become sons of perdition, and not till then. Every person has the privilege of retaining it there for ever and ever. If they neglect that privilege, then their names will be erased, and not till then. All the names of the human family are written there, and the Lord will hold them there until they come to the knowledge of the truth, that they can rebel against him, and can sin against the Holy Ghost; then they will be thrust down to hell, and their names be blotted out from the Lamb’s Book of Life. 6:297.” – Brigham Young [Note: this is found on p. 387 in the non-electronic format]

Romans 16:18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

CES Devotional Broadcast, ‘What is Truth,’ January 2013; “…Because we see through a glass darkly, we have to trust the Lord, who sees all things clearly.” – Dieter Uchtdorf

Recently I saw the image to the left on a Mormon Facebook page.

I’ve looked for a link to verify that Mr. Bednar actually made this statement while he was in the Philippians, but haven’t found anything. While we don’t know if he actually said this, or if it’s just the opinion of the creator of the image, it sure gives us some insight into the thinking process of some Mormons.

I’ve added a link under ‘References’ for you to check out the Facebook page for yourselves.

Coming back to the statement in the picture, when I first read it I thought to myself, it’s not hard at all not being a Mormon.

Luke 18:11, 13; “The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.”

Mormon Today, ‘Elder Hales’ Advice on How to End Your Prayer Could Change Your Life’;  “When we end our prayers with “Thy will be done,” we are doing what the Savior did in the Garden of Gethsemane, for what we are saying is, “Whatever the test, whatever I’m to learn, I will always love Thee.” – Robert D. Hales
