Times sure have changed since I was a young girl sitting in Sacrament Meetings.

I still recall watching a young woman in a smartly pressed plaid skirt and tear-stained face, stand to apologize to her parents she had been called to serve a mission. Back in the seventies it wasn’t deemed a good thing to be called, simply because it meant you still weren’t married by the ripe ol’ age of 22.

As time has marched on, the Saints have had to modify their missionary program in ways I’m sure has made them loosen neck ties to make breathing easier.

A few months ago I took notice of an article in Religion News Service who reported on the significant amount of missionaries who were returning home early. Here in part is what they said –

More Mormon missionaries are coming home early, study shows

Religion News Service September 26, 2018

“…fully one-third of Millennial Mormons who went out on a mission came home before their assigned time… In the Millennial generation, for example, 35% of female missionaries returned early, compared to 29% of male missionaries.” — Jana Riess

Doctrine and Covenants 84:86, 91 “Therefore, let no man among you, for this commandment is unto all the faithful who are called of God in the church unto the ministry, from this hour take purse or scrip, that goeth forth to proclaim this gospel of the kingdom. 91 And he that doeth not these things is not my disciple; by this you may know my disciples.” — 1832 (more…)

The other day I came across a video on YouTube of a Christian Pastor interviewing two Mormon missionaries. He asked them many questions about some of the core, deeper doctrines of Mormonism, and was told things that you probably won’t hear from the missionaries when they come to your door. Throughout the interview, the missionaries were very polite and cordial and seemed to do their best to answer the questions he asked them.

I’d like to go through some of the questions and content of the interview. I’ll make sure to link the video along with time stamps of where the question was asked so you can hear their answers for yourself.

(Just a reminder before you watch the video, anytime a Mormon uses the phrase “the gospel of Jesus Christ” they are referring to the Mormon gospel, not the biblical gospel.) (more…)

Mormon Newsroom, pp. 8 –11; “Appendix…Honesty and Integrity. “Be honest with yourself, others, and God at all times. Being honest means choosing not to lie, steal, cheat, or deceive in any way. …“Closely associated with honesty is integrity. Integrity means thinking and doing what is right at all times, no matter what the consequences. …Choose to live so that your thoughts and behavior are always in harmony with the gospel””

For members of the LDS Church, the list of requirements to prove their worthiness to the Mormon god is arduous. In order to receive salvation in Mormonism, there are several ‘worthiness interviews’ they must go through in determining if they’re truly acceptable to their god.

Today we’re looking at yet another worthiness requirement, recently implemented for their missionary workforce. Along with that announcement, we’re also looking at the latest news regarding the Church’s missionary workforce. Let’s get started!

Answers: Straightforward Answers to Tough Gospel Questions, pp. 215 – 216; “There is an important point in all of this, Elder,” I said. “Never let anyone outside the Church tell you what the Church teaches. You were sent out to teach, not to be taught (see D&C 43:15). The doctrines of the Church will always come to you through the channels that the Lord ordained, and the Lord didn’t ordain anti-Mormon literature as one of those channels.” – Joseph Fielding McConkie

Mr. Bruce R. McConkie was a prolific author, and his repertoire is far too long to enumerate here, suffice it to say he was one of the Church’s top authors outside of its founder, Joe Smith himself. That said, opinions on who McConkie was, and the legacy he left, is as long and varied as the voluminous works he penned.

You can find the following talk/article Mr. McConkie authored through a number of venues, I found our reference for it at FamilySearch.org. It originally appeared in a 1963 edition of ‘Harvester’, a magazine for LDS missionaries.

John 14:6; “Jesus saith unto him: I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

mormon_missionaries New Era, ‘Questions and Answers,’ February 1971;

“As I pray about a mission, the Lord says to me not to go.

“When should a young man not go on a mission?”

Answer/Elder Gordon B. Hinckley

In the first place a man does not initiate his mission call. In light of this, it is not his prerogative to choose or not to choose to go on a mission. His bishop and stake president recommend him, and he may state his desire to them. The call comes from the President of the Church, and the young man may then accept or reject it.”

Conference Report, October 1974, pp. 116-117; “…One obsession of this Church and all its members is missionary work… …if you receive a call from the Lord through your bishop and stake presidency, it is your privilege, but also your obligation, to fill that calling…Every boy in every country in all the world who has been baptized and received the Holy Ghost will have the responsibility of bearing the message of the gospel to the people of the world.” – Spencer W. Kimball

mormon_missionariesLast month we posted an article we saw in the Salt Lake Tribune announcing the Church’s goal of having 100,000 Mormon missionaries out in the field by 2019. We posted it for two specific reasons.

1. Provide a heads up to watch out for more missionaries in your neighborhood.

2. To ask Christians to pray the young men and women would come into contact with a true believer and hear the truth while out on the road.

It looks like the prayers of faithful Christians are being answered! I came across a notice in my Google Alerts highlighting an article from ABC News with the latest stat reports from the Church. They reported while the LDS missionary force has grown exponentially, their conversion rates aren’t keeping the same pace. PTL!

mormon_missionariesYesterday I made a comment if the missionaries knocked on my door today I’d ask them about D&C 27:11 that’s still cemented in LDS canon.  Well guess what?

As I was putzin’ around the house this evening a knock at the door told me I wouldn’t be doing that for much longer…
