Journal of Discourses 13:195 “This law of monogamy, or the monogamic system, laid the foundation for prostitution and the evils and diseases of the most revolting nature and character under which modern Christendom groans, for as God has implanted, for a wise purpose, certain feelings in the breasts of females as well as males, the gratification of which is necessary to health and happiness, and which can only be accomplished legitimately in the married state…” — Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, October 7, 1869 (more…)

Journal of Discourses 16:135-136 “We read that he went to his own native country, where he was born, among his neighbors and acquaintances on a certain occasion, and that he could not do many mighty miracles there because of their unbelief.

What a great pity it was that Jesus had not some of the learned divines of the present day to instruct him!

They would no doubt have told Jesus that because of the greatness of the unbelief in his own neighborhood and among his acquaintances he must perform some greater miracles among them than he did anywhere else.

That would have been consistent with the present ideas of theologians. But in those days Jesus operated among the people according to their faith, and the greater the unbelief, the less the miracles.” — Orson  Pratt, New Tabernacle, Salt Lake City, Sunday Morning, July, 13, 1873 (more…)

Journal of Discourses 12:344 “For the Lord has said in this book, (the Book of Mormon) which has been published for thirty eight years, that if they will not repent He will throw down all their strongholds and cut off the cities of the land, and will execute vengeance and fury on the nation, even as upon the heathen, such as they have not heard. That He will send a desolating scourge on the land; that He will leave their cities desolate, without inhabitants. For instance the great, powerful and populous city of New York, that may be considered one of the greatest cities of the world, will in a few years become a mass of ruins.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, Sunday, Dec. 27, 1868. Romans 8:5; “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.”

Mormon Jesus 3How many times each day are we living ‘according to the flesh’? Do you stop to think about every action, and thought, you have on any given day? I know over the years I’ve become more alert to my reactions and even thoughts, to peripheral events around me. Our verse above gave me pause the other day when I came across the section of Pratt’s book.

Looking over many of the doctrines in Mormon canon, I was struck by the numerous times this phrase (according to the flesh) presented itself, so today we’re taking a look at just one example of how the Church has used it. I have to wonder if any of the Mormon people pick up on what Paul said in Romans…

As a heads up – this excerpt today is rather offensive. If you have a disposition that can’t stomach strong heresy,  you might want to stop reading at this point.

Mormon Decisions 10The Essential Orson Pratt, pp 150-151; “The gathering together of the few scattered manuscripts which compose what is now termed the Bible was the work of uninspired man which took place centuries after John finished his manuscript.

Among the vast number of professedly inspired manuscripts, scattered through the world, man, poor, weak, ignorant man assumed the authority to select a few, which according to his frail judgment, he believed or conjectured were of God, but the balance not agreeing, perhaps, with his peculiar notions of divine inspiration, were rejected as spurious.

salt lake mormon temple 2The Seer, pg 255; “All other churches are entirely destitute of all authority from God; and any person who receives baptism or the Lord’s Supper from their hands will highly offend God; for He looks upon them as most corrupt of all people. Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the whore of Babylon.” – Orson Pratt

What Makes a Christian Church Christian?

Journal of Discourses 18:44; “If we can find a church that has the gifts and the signs spoken of by the New Testament, we can find true Christian Church; but if we can’t find such, we have no reason to believe that there is such a Church on the earth. “But,” says one, “we call ourselves Christians.” That is a very easy matter; but calling yourselves Christians or Christian churches does not make you such.” – Orson Pratt, Salt Lake City, July 11, 1875
