Mormon Decisions 10Genesis 3:21; “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.”

Today we’re looking at part of the LDS temple ceremony known as theFig Leaf Apron for Garden Temple Ceremony Garden Endowment Ceremony. Our purpose in doing this is to ask Mormons why they’d celebrate the sin of Adam and Eve. We’re only posting the part of this section that pertains to our subject matter, but if you’d like to read it in full you can do so by clicking on this link.

Fig Aprons & Hiding from God

Mormon Decisions 10Let’s take a look at what happened in the Garden of Eden at the moment Adam and Eve sinned.

Genesis 3:7-8, 14, 21; “And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. 8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. 14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed. 21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.”

Vows

Ensign, “Heed the Prophet’s Voice”, November 1994; “Today we have had the opportunity of raising our right arms to the square and sustaining Howard W. Hunter as our President. This is a historic occasion, as well as an opportunity to contemplate the blessing it is to have a prophet of God to lead us. I believe we should pause at the conclusion of this memorable session to remember what it means to sustain a President of the Church as a seer and a prophet…The Lord Almighty leads this Church, and he will never suffer you to be led astray if you are found doing your duty. You may go home and sleep as sweetly as a babe in its mother’s arms, as to any danger of your leaders leading you astray, for if they should try to do so the Lord would quickly sweep them from the earth. Your leaders are trying to live their religion as far as [they are] capable of doing so” (in Journal of Discourses, 9:289).” – Tom L. Perry

Matthew 5:33, 36; “Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths…36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”

Raising your hand in promising to tell the truth in a court room or showing your affirmation in voting someone into office is not the same as what the Mormon Church is doing.

Holding your arm to the square whether you’re voting someone into office or taking a vow/oath to the Mormon god while in a temple is not, let me repeat, not from God. This action is performed in Masonic temples while taking oaths to bow down and promise loyalty to Jahbulon.

While taking oaths in the Mormon temple ceremony, Mormons hold their arm to the square and promise to keep the Laws of Sacrifice just before they take the First Token of the Aaronic Priesthood. This will be one of many times they do this during the ceremonies

The following is part of the script from theGarden Endowment Ceremony”;

Each of you bring your right arm to the square.

You and each of you solemnly covenant and promise before God, angels, and these witnesses at this altar that you will observe and keep the law of sacrifice, as contained in the Old and New Testaments, as it has been explained to you.

Each of you bow your head and say, “Yes””.

Secret Societies

Evidences and Reconciliations, pg 282; “And again, I would further suggest the impropriety of the organization of bands or companies, by covenant or oaths, by penalties or secrecies; but let the time past of our experience and sufferings by the wickedness of Doctor Avard suffice and let our covenant be that of the Everlasting Covenant, as is contained in the Holy Writ and the things that God hath revealed unto us. Pure friendship always becomes weakened that very moment you undertake to make it stronger by penal oaths and secrecy. (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 146)

The Initiatory Ceremony

Pre-1990

The ceremony script here is what took place in the temple before 1990.  We’ll be posting the scripts for the latest revision later.

The Initiatory Ceremony is a preliminary four stage ritual performed before the Endowment Ceremonies in the temple.  These ceremonies are performed on an individual basis while the Endowment Ceremonies are performed within a group setting of typically twenty patrons.

Temple Ceremonies and the Clothing

By Melissa Grimes

My journey out of Mormonism began with the Mormon Temple. One night my husband was watching a documentary on Freemasonry and noticed how similar their temple rites were to those we participated in at the Mormon Temple.  At this point of my Mormon experience I had doubts off and on about the validity of Joseph Smith’s claims yet never delved into any serious research. I was simply content in my ignorance, as I trusted in the words of the church leaders to quiet my concerns.
