General Conference, ‘Sustainable Societies’, October 2020 “Whether aware of it or not, every man, woman and child of every belief, place and time is imbued with the light of Christ and therefore possesses the sense of right and wrong we often call a conscience.” — D. Todd Christofferson (more…)

Russell M. Nelson begins his talk to the women by saying –

“You have not only the numbers but the spiritual power to change the world. I have watched you doing just that during this pandemic.”

He then gives them three principles to help them navigate the current situation the world is in now.

As I read this quote a couple thoughts came into my mind. I asked myself – What “spiritual power’ is he referring to, and where are these powers coming from? (more…)

Self-Fulfilled Prophecies

General Conference, ‘All Nations, Kindreds, and Tongues’ October 2020 “…consider how the prophecies God gives His servants are fulfilled. … As we hearken to the Lord’s spirit of prophecy, we can become, in our own way, part of the fulfillment of His prophecies…” — Gerrit Gong

Today we’re checking out two talks given at GC; one by Dallin Oaks, the other by David Bednar. As we’ve noted earlier, the main theme for this conference was addressing racism. However, true to form, they couldn’t miss the opportunity to throw in the obligatory false teachings.

4.Proving Oneself for Eternal Progression

General Conference, ‘We Will Prove Them Herewith’, October 2020 “…tests in the school of mortality are a vital element of our eternal progression. Interestingly, however, the word test is not found even one time in the scriptural text of the standard works in English.

Rather, words such as prove, examine, and try are used to describe various patterns of demonstrating appropriately our spiritual knowledge about, understanding of, and devotion to our Heavenly Father’s eternal plan of happiness and our capacity to seek for the blessings of the Savior’s Atonement. …The process of proving ourselves is a fundamental part of Heavenly Father’s great plan of happiness.” — David A. Bednar

General Conference, ‘Becoming Like Him,’ October 2020 “Becoming as Jesus Christ is will require changing our hearts and minds, indeed, our very character… By focusing deeply on one needed attribute, as you progress in obtaining that attribute, other attributes begin to accrue.” — Scott D. Whiting (more…)

‘Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet’. Acts 7:48

Today, and tomorrow we’re looking at a few talks given at General Conference earlier this month, and pulled some of the most notable things that were said. It seems there were two main topics this time around. Most of the talks focused on race issues, or keeping a current temple recommend, or both.

As an FYI, the numbering system we’ve used here doesn’t reflect the order of talks given at the conference.

1‘Badge of Obedience to a Prophet of God’.

General Conference, ‘Recommended to the Lord’, October 2020 “Latter-day Saint temples…stand as testaments of faith in eternal life. … He sets the standards by which we enter as His guests.

The phrase “recommended to the Lord” puts additional perspective on being interviewed regularly by Church leaders. … A temple recommend is not a checklist or ticket for special seating. … To be “recommended of the Lord” means striving to become like Him. …

During President Howard W. Hunter’s first address as 14th President of the Church, he said, “It would please the Lord if every adult member would be worthy of — and carry — a current temple recommend.” After hearing President Hunter that day, President Russell M. Nelson said his temple recommend “became my badge of obedience to a prophet of God.”

Though temples throughout the world are closed or in limited use…being worthy to attend the temple has not been suspended. Whether you have access to a temple or not, you need a current temple recommend to stay firmly on the covenant path.” — Ronald A. Rasband (more…)

ChurchNews.com “President Nelson told listeners to “please listen carefully to what I am about to say. God does not love one race more than another. His doctrine on this matter is clear. He invites all to come unto Him, ‘black and white, bond and free, male and female’ (2 Nephi 26:33). I assure you that your standing before God is not determined by the color of your skin. Favor or disfavor with God is dependent upon your devotion to God and His commandments, and not the color of your skin.” (more…)

ChurchNews.com “President M. Russell Ballard, “No matter how you pray or to whom you pray, please exercise your faith — whatever your faith may be — and pray for your country and for your national leaders. … This is not about politics or policy. This is about peace and the healing that can come to individual souls as well as to the souls of countries.” — M. Russell Ballard (more…)
