Golden plates & Joseph SmithToday we’re taking a look at Joseph Smith’s behavior between 1820 – 1827 to determine whether his activities reflected that of someone who had been called of God.  This was a critical time in Smith’s life and his track record stands as a solid witness of what he was doing from the time of his first vision in the woods to the day he was able to retrieve the golden plates of Mormonism.

Common sense tells us his story needs to line up with four important sources; Joe Smith, the LDS Church, empirical outsider testimonies and most importantly, God.

Carthage shootoutMartyrdom:  the act of extreme suffering; torment.

Martyr:  a person who willingly suffers death rather than renounces his or her religion.  One who makes great sacrifices or suffers much in order to further a belief, cause or principle.

The definitions of martyr and martyrdom above will serve as the foundation of what we’re looking at today for this subject matter.  The Mormon Church has emphatically defended their position that Joseph Smith fulfilled the requirements of martyrdom.  I thought it’d behoove us to look at how people in history have indeed become martyrs for the Lord and compare those alongside the case of Joseph Smith.

Jupiter Talisman 2It’s almost impossible to do any research on Mormonism without coming across historical documentation of Joseph Smith’s participation in the occult and the speech we’re listing here is a good example of that.

Of all the subjects within the world of Mormonism, learning about Joseph’s participation in the occult is what shocked me the most when I finally left the Church.  All I can say is that I had absolutely no idea he did these things, but looking back on the things I participated in as a Mormon I shouldn’t have been surprised…

joseph smith 3I told myself years ago that I wouldn’t be shocked anymore when I come across the outrageous things Mormon leaders say.  Yeah well, I went against my own good advice and here we are today.

I remember what it was like growing up in Mormonism and feeling an overwhelming adoration and loyalty towards Joseph Smith. I vividly recall sitting in Sunday school and cringing as the teacher told us how Joseph Smith had been tarred and feathered.

J. SmithGetting a grasp on who Joseph Smith was makes understanding Mormonism a bit easier. We pray looking at his life and rap sheet will open eyes to this manmade religion.

We’ve documented and written about Smith’s life from the time of his first vision to the day he died.  And then we looked in the Bible to learn what God thinks of writing new scriptures, polygamy, lying to the government, and digging for buried treasure and compared those things with Joseph Smith.  As we looked deeper into his story we saw all those things plus adultery, witchcraft, and Masonry.  Sadly, it seemed the list would never end.

You can access those articles here or over on the right sidebar there’s a new widget called “All about Joseph”!

So who was the real Joseph Smith? Well, it all depends on who you ask.

The LDS Church portrays him as the most important, pivotal man that ever walked the face of the earth.

The Christian community views him as a false prophet while the secular world (Christians too) sees him as a pedophile and philanderer.

June 27th marks the day Joseph Smith was shot and killed while in the Carthage Jail awaiting trial for charges of polygamy, treason and arson among other things.  I thought it’d be a good idea to reflect on who Joseph really was and who he claimed to be. He is after all the entire reason Mormonism exists.

A couple of weeks ago I happened across an interesting post on the Church’s website. Lo and behold it was an entire page showcasing how members should feel it a privilege to follow, ah-hem, “stand by”, ol’ Joe…sigh…

The next day their painting of Joseph was taken down, but after a search I found an article originally posted with the picture I saw the day before. It’s called “Stand by My Servant Joseph Smith”.  The article was from the February 2013 Ensign, written by BYU President, Cecil Samuelson.

So all that to ask the questions you know I have!

WHY???  Why is it considered a privilege to stand by Joseph Smith?

Joseph Smith Polygamy Quotes

We’ve been receiving a few e-mails lately asking for information on polygamy and what Joseph Smith said and taught about it in the public forum.  Here are a few notable things Mr. Smith had to say.

Joseph Smith, Nephi and Moroni

Nephi or Moroni, Who Visited Joseph that Night?

What do you think?  Could both stories be true?

Introductory page of D&C 1976, 3rd paragraph; This took place in the early spring of 1820.  In September, 1823, and at later times, Joseph Smith received visitations from Moroni, an angel of light, who revealed the resting place of the ancient record from which The Book of Mormon was afterward translated.
