The name of the LDS Sunday School Lesson for week #28 is “After the Fire a Still Small Voice” and it centers on 1^st Kings and the prophet Elijah.

My heart hurts. It hurts because of the lies being fed to the Mormon people week after week through the onslaught of misleading statements and downright blatant lies about God and the people He worked through in the Old Testament. This pain and heaviness is reminiscent of my days in Mormonism. Going to church every Sunday as a Mormon reminded me of all the works I still had to do in the upcoming week and it was cumbersome.

Sunday School Old Testament: Lesson 27

The lesson begins in 1 Kings 12 with Solomon’s son King Rehoboam and his foolish actions which led to the division between Judah and Israel. As it continues on, using Rehoboam his great-grandson Jehoshaphat as examples of what a godly leader should look like. The lesson lists five qualities any righteous leader must have to lead effectively. These qualities are: gives service, trusts and obeys the Lord, has faith in God, teaches from the scriptures, and lastly follows the prophets.

When I opened up the link to this next study to begin my assessment of the lesson I was astonished to see that they only spent one class period in the book of Psalms. My jaw dropped to the floor as I read the advisement the class and teachers are given to “study the scriptures discussed here and as much of the book of Psalms as you can.”(Emphasis mine)

The Church finished up looking at 1^st Samuel this week and in doing so totally missed what the real message is in this very important part of the Bible. Covenants.

Lesson 19 centers around the battles in the book of Judges. It highlights the challenges Barak and Deborah had as they free Israel from the Canaanites, Gideon’s command to deliver Israel from the Midianites, and Samson’s failure to live up to the vows he made as a Nazarene.

The title of the lesson this week is “I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord” and the purpose is “to encourage members to submit to God’s will without hesitation”.

In light of the Church’s theory on evolving revelations and the lesson last week of following the prophet, the title of this lesson seems rather ambiguous. How can a Mormon follow the word of God and the Mormon prophets as well?

It might (or might not) be a surprise for you to hear that these songs have little to nothing to do with Jesus Christ, and everything to do with praise and honor to a mortal man, their prophet.

Sunday School Old Testament: Lesson 14

The purpose of this next lesson is for the class members to learn what it means to “partake of the Lord’s spiritual water and bread, sustain his chosen leaders, and obey his commandments so he can make of them a “holy nation.”

It covers the Israelites murmuring because they were hungry and thirsty, and then how the Lord blessed them with water, manna and quail. It compares the water that came from the rock Moses hit with his staff and the manna that fell from the sky to the precepts of Mormonism, and is basically another lesson on how you can work your way into the presence of God.

This next lesson goes into Moses freeing the Israelites from bondage, the plagues in Egypt and the Passover. It takes the class through the first fourteen chapters rather quickly without taking the time to truly study what God has to teach us from these events. I can’t believe I used to think this was an acceptable way to study God’s word, especially when it comes to a Sunday school class. I guess sitting under pastors who preach expository has spoiled me. 🙂

This week the lesson uses Genesis chapters 40—45 and is based on three different topics. This time around they touched on Joseph’s captivity in Egypt and his reaction to his life’s circumstances, the Mormon food storage program and of course the ever present comparison of their Joseph whose suffering rivaled that of the Joseph in the Bible.

They want to teach members how to abstain from sexual immorality when faced with temptations like Joseph was with Potipher’s wife and how to handle adversity when being punished for improprieties you haven’t committed.

As with most of their lessons this next one has a tiny bit of truth mixed in with a whole bunch of nonsense, I hope to adequately address both in the following paragraphs. The premise of lesson 9 centers on sacrifice, it gives a biblical account of Abraham’s attempt to sacrifice Isaac and touches on this being a similitude of God’s willingness to sacrifice Jesus.
