Journal of Discourses 12:121 “…this class of men are now seeking to denude the Constitution of the United States of all its protective and saving powers.
Why all this? They killed the Prophet. The mob that collected at Carthage, Illinois, to commit that deed of blood contained a delegation representing every State in the Union. Each has received its blood stain. … …said they, “we will not hearken to the counsels of this man;” for, like the Jews of old, they were afraid if they let him live he would take away their place and nation. … If they had hearkened to the counsel of Joseph Smith, this nation would have had no wars; there would have been no division in the Government, but it would have gone on in harmony and prosperity…” – Brigham Young, Toole City, August 17, 1867 (more…)

I SHALL DIE INNOCENT, AND IT SHALL YET BE SAID OF ME—HE WAS MURDERED IN COLD BLOOD.”—The same morning after Hyrum had made ready to go—shall it be said to the slaughter? yes, for so it was—he read the following paragraph, near the close of the twelfth chapter of Ether, in the Book of Mormon, and turned down the leaf upon it:

As everyone knows, today marks the anniversary of Joseph Smith’s death. While I’ve been reading the various e-mails they reminded me of how it once filled me with pride and a great sense of indignation that anyone would kill God’s prophet.
It never crossed my mind as a Mormon what his death did for me personally. That thought didn’t cross my mind until after I’d left my heritage so I’m posing the question here for the Mormons today.

Anniversary of the killing of Joseph Smith
On June 27, 1844 a group of men known as the Carthage Greys headed to the holding cell of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, John Taylor and Willard Richards. When they got there a gun battle would ensue, leaving Joseph and Hyrum Smith dead as well as two others from the Carthage Greys. Joseph Smith was the reason the two other men were killed. History of the Church 6:617-621.
