People often ask us at LAM if anyone knew what Smith and his friends were up to in the early days of Mormonism.

The answer to that is a resounding, YES!

Books and pamphlets were written exposing the Church’s nefarious deeds. Conferences were held, meetings scheduled, and an all out propaganda machine was in full swing denouncing what Smith and company were doing. For many, it wasn’t just the fact he was spreading a false gospel, oh no. Many were up in arms because of the wanton sexual licentious they engaged in, reminiscent of the days in Sodom and Gomorrah. People were horrified learning about the spiritual wifery, and swapping wives amongst themselves for a higher status.

Many dubbed their activities as nothing less than prostitution on the Western Frontier.

Today we’re highlighting two of the more well known ‘anti-Mormons’ of the time; John Bowes, and John Hyde, Jr. We’ve pulled a quote from each of their books to give readers an idea of what others thought of Mormonism.

We’re also wondering…

August 30 – Jeremiah 14:14; “Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.”

Journal of Discourses 6:180-181; “The next man who came on to the carpet wanted to know how many wives brother Brigham had. I replied… ‘I will guess, if that will do you any good….he has some fifty or sixty.’” – Ezra T. Benson, Great Salt Lake City, January 24, 1858

Journal of Discourses 11:269; “I heard the revelation on polygamy, and I believed it with all my heart, and I know it is from God – I know that he revealed it from heaven; I know that it is true, and understand the bearings of it and why it is. “Do you think that we shall ever be admitted as a State into the Union without denying the principle of polygamy?” If we are not admitted until then, we shall never be admitted.” – Brigham Young, Great Salt Lake City, Aug 19, 1866

2 Corinthians 6:17; “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,”

Paul’s admonition to the true believers in the early church is our focus for today. We’re pleading with the Mormons to come out of the darkness, and into the light of God’s truth!

I was reminded again of the Church’s true agenda. Hide and don’t seek, but more on that in a moment…

I came across an interesting article on a couple of different ‘anti-Mormon’ websites who focused on an LDS lesson manual published in 1997; The Teachings of Brigham Young. The problem with the manual wasn’t so much on what it said, but what it didn’t say.

The following is an overview of what they’re teaching about the second prophet of Mormonism in their adult classes. The irony shan’t be missed considering there’s a university named on his behalf, yet their members aren’t afforded the necessary information to learn all there is about the man.

History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5:134 – 135; “Happiness is the object and design of our existence; and will be the end thereof, if we pursue the path that leads to it; and this path is virtue, uprightness, faithfulness, holiness, and keeping all the commandments of God. But we cannot keep all the commandments without first knowing them, and we cannot expect to know all, or more than we now know unless we comply with or keep those we have already received. That which is wrong under one circumstance, may be, and often is, right under another.” – Joseph Smith

Journal of Discourses 5:29-30; “Women are to be led. If I should undertake to drive a woman, I should have to drive her before me; and then she becomes my leader the moment I do that. I should lead her; and she should be led by me, if I am a good man; and if I am not a good man, I have no just right in this Church to a wife or wives, or to the power to propagate my species. What, then, should be done with me? Make a eunuch of me, and stop my propagation.” – Heber C. Kimball, Great Salt Lake City, July 12, 1857

january-witnessing-tip-of-the-day-6-0 January 23 – The Promise of Hagar. Mormons are led to believe through the Doctrine and Covenants, the promises sprang from Hagar and her seed. D&C 132:34 reads; “God commanded Abraham, and Sarah gave Hagar to Abraham to wife. And why did she do it? Because this was the law; and from Hagar sprang many people. This, therefore, was fulfilling, among other things, the promises”.

december-witnessing-tip-of-the-day-5 December 6 – Fulfilled. Jesus would be a Light to the Gentiles. Isaiah 42:1-9; “Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. 2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. 3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. 4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law. 5 ¶ Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: 6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; 7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. 8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. 9 Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.”

The SeerThe Seer, p. 153; “God loves the children of men according to their works, or according to the good qualities which He perceives in them those who do the best he loves the best if they do equally well, He loves them equally.

Man should be exercised with the same principle; he should judge in righteousness of the good qualities and desires of his family, and should love those the best who do the best.

And if any of his family err, he should still love them the same as God loves his family, though they may sometimes err and go astray. God loves his family, not for their errors and sins, but because He sees that there are good qualities existing in them, and trys to save them from their sins; so man should love his wives, not because of their errors and imperfections, but because God has given them to him, and because they, in the main, desire to do right; therefore, he should love them and try to save them from their errors; and he should never love one. more than another, unless they merit it.” – Orson Pratt

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

You have to hand it to that Orson Pratt fellow. While 100% of his prophecies and theories on life were wrong, he was the only one in the Mormon hierarchy who actually came right out and said what everyone else already knew.

The Mormon god is only going to love and accept you with the same amount of effort you put out. If you find yourself coming up short in the patience department, so does he. If you’ve sinned more than you should have yesterday, you’re going to find yourself further down on the totem pole of acceptance today.

Question:

Why would an omnipotent, omniscient God only love people when they obey? Is this the type of god you want to worship? If you’re a parent, is this how you love your own children?

polygamy1The LDS Church has a few things in common with a rather obscure creature from the animal world; the chameleon.

The chameleon can change colors to blend in, and they’re usually solitary creatures unless they’re seen with a group of other female chameleons.

Joseph F. SmithToday we’re looking at the never ending lies about polygamy published by the LDS Church. They just can’t seem to be honest when it comes to this topic! The lies about polygamy began with Joe Smith way back in 1834, and as you’ll see today, Hyrum Smith’s son is doing the exact same thing 80  years later. As they say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree…

This first presidency message was written by Joseph F. Smith, and appeared in the Deseret News, and the London Times May 1st & May 6th, 1911.

spring cleaningIn September 2013, LDS Apostle D. Todd Christofferson, delivered a speech at a BYU devotional announcing the Church’s plan to release selected documents of Joe Smith’s history. In the process of doing this, the online ‘Gospel Topics’ portal would find itself under a major revision with housing the newly published ‘LDS Essays’. In sum, these essays are the explanations on various topics on the histories of both the Church, and Joe Smith.

You can find a link for Mr. Christofferson’s BYU speech here, and the link for a list of their essays here.

Today it looks as if the Church is holding the marathon spring cleaning event of the century. In addition to the essays, you can find another set of documents containing more of the Church’s history, Smith diaries, and revelations, et al, at JosephSmithPapers. This is what we’re looking at today! Woo-hoo! We’re actually focusing on a couple of different things, so hang with me, and it’ll all make sense!
