December 6 – Fulfilled. Jesus would be a Light to the Gentiles. Isaiah 42:1-9 “Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. 2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. 3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. 4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law. 5 ¶ Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: 6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; 7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. 8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. 9 Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.”

Journal of Discourses 5:364 “A gentleman, with whom I came in contact while at Washington, made this objection against Mormonism. Talking about the institution of plurality of wives, said he, “It never will answer; it will break up all the whorehouses in the country; for women would not abide in such establishments and sustain them, if they could only have respectable and comfortable houses. This polygamy system will smash up that (Christian) institution altogether.” – George A. Smith, Salt Lake City, November 1, 1857

TodayinMormonHistory.com “– 175 years ago today – Sep 15, 1843 — William Clayton writes in his journal: “President Joseph told me he had lately had a new item of law revealed to him in relation to myself. He said the Lord had revealed to him that a man could only take 2 of a family except by express revelation and as I had said I intended to take Lydia he made this known for my benefit. To have more than two in a family was apt to cause wrangles and trouble. He finally asked if I would not give L[ydia] to him. I said I would so far as I had anything to do in it. He requested me to talk to her.
Lydia Moon, who had just turned 17, was the younger sister of two of Clayton’s wives: legal wife Ruth Moon and his first plural wife Margaret Moon. Clayton had been courting Lydia to become his plural wife until Joseph Smith told him of the recently-revealed “new item of law.” Clayton talked to Lydia Moon about becoming Joseph’s plural wife but she never would agree to it. She later apostatized from the Church.” (more…)

“Few men have ever lived who have manifested such integrity and such unflinching moral and physical courage as our beloved President who has just gone from us. He never knew the feeling of fear connected with the work of God. But in the face of angry mobs, and at other times when in imminent danger of personal violence from those who threatened his life, and upon occasions when the people were menaced with public peril, he never [flinched]—his knees never trembled, his hand never shook.” (more…)

Doctrines of Salvation 2:67; “FAMILY UNIT CONTINUES ONLY IN CELESTIAL KINGDOM…We believe that the family will go on. I get a great deal of comfort out of the thought that if I am faithful and worthy of an exaltation, my father will be my father, and I will be subject to him as his son through all eternity; that I will recognize and know my mother and she will be my mother in all eternity; and my brothers and sisters will be my brothers and sisters for all eternity; and that my children and my wives will be mine in eternity. I don’t know how some other people feel, but that is a glorious thought to me. That helps to keep me sober.” – Joseph Fielding Smith

People often ask us at LAM if anyone knew what Smith and his friends were up to in the early days of Mormonism.
The answer to that is a resounding, YES!
Books and pamphlets were written exposing the Church’s nefarious deeds. Conferences were held, meetings scheduled, and an all out propaganda machine was in full swing denouncing what Smith and company were doing. For many, it wasn’t just the fact he was spreading a false gospel, oh no. Many were up in arms because of the wanton sexual licentious they engaged in, reminiscent of the days in Sodom and Gomorrah. People were horrified learning about the spiritual wifery, and swapping wives amongst themselves for a higher status.
Many dubbed their activities as nothing less than prostitution on the Western Frontier.
Today we’re highlighting two of the more well known ‘anti-Mormons’ of the time; John Bowes, and John Hyde, Jr. We’ve pulled a quote from each of their books to give readers an idea of what others thought of Mormonism.
We’re also wondering…
