July 30 — BoM Believers Turned White. 3 Nephi 19:25 “And it came to pass that Jesus blessed them as they did pray unto him; and his countenance did smile upon them, and the light of his countenance did shine upon them, and behold they were as white as the countenance and also the garments of Jesus; and behold the whiteness thereof did exceed all the whiteness, yea, even there could be nothing upon earth so white as the whiteness thereof.” (more…)

“Likewise, the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” Romans 8:26

July 28 — Christian Prayers to be Shunned. Mormon Doctrine, p. 414 “Those formal, written prayers which are commonly read by ministers, and those recited by lay church members in doing penance or seeking grace, are devoid of the true spirit of prayer and should be shunned. Frequently they are spoken without real intent; and their use keeps men from searching their own hearts in an attempt to pray in faith according to an approved pattern so that actual blessings may be gained from Deity.” — Bruce McConkie (more…)

“A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.” Proverbs 14:5

July 27 — Joseph Smith, the Chosen One. “Come: Hear the Voice of the Lord”, Ensign, December 1985 “Joseph Smith himself read in the book of James the famous words known to us all: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5.)

In describing his feelings at the time, he said: “Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine. It seemed to enter with great force into every feeling of my heart. I reflected on it again and again.” (JS—H 1:12.)

Then, because the hour had come for the ushering in of the dispensation of the fulness of times, and because he was the one chosen and foreordained from eternity to commence the work, the Great God and his Beloved Son, descending in eternal splendor from the courts of glory, manifested themselves to this guileless and believing youth.

But, be it remembered, the scripture was the guidepost leading to the receipt of the First Vision, a vision equalled by few in import and glory in all the history of the world.” — Bruce McConkie (more…)

Alma 24:19 “And thus we see that, when these Lamanites were brought to believe and to know the truth, they were firm, and would suffer even unto death rather than commit sin; and thus we see that they buried their weapons of peace, or they buried the weapons of war, for peace.” (more…)

July 25 — The Way to Heaven. Teachings of the Presidents of the Church, p. 8 “Only the valiant will be exalted and receive the highest degree of glory, hence ‘many are called, but few are chosen.’ (D&C 121:40.) As the Savior put it, ‘. . . strait is the gate, and narrow the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.’ And conversely, ‘. . . wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat.’ (Matt. 7:13, 14.)” – Spencer W. Kimball (more…)

July 23 — Families are Forever in Godhood Status. Deseret News, 13 Mar. 1897, President Lorenzo Snow taught: “When two Latter-day Saints are united together in marriage, promises are made to them concerning their offspring that reach from eternity to eternity. They are promised that they shall have the power and the right to govern and control and administer salvation and exaltation and glory to their offspring, worlds without end. And what offspring they do not have here, undoubtedly there will be opportunities to have them hereafter. What else could man wish? A man and a woman, in the other life, having celestial bodies, free from sickness and disease, glorified and beautified beyond description, standing in the midst of their posterity, governing and controlling them, administering life, exaltation and glory worlds without end” (Deseret News, 13 Mar. 1897; quoted by Spencer W. Kimball in The Miracle of Forgiveness [1969], 246). (Lesson 10 of The Latter-day Saint Woman: Basic Manual for Women, Part A) http://www.lds.org/manual/the-latter-day-saint-woman-basic-manual-for-women-part-a?lang=eng (more…)

July 22 — Heaven’s Gatekeeper. Journal of Discourses 7:289 “…no man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith. From the day that the Priesthood was taken from the earth to the winding-up scene of all things, every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, junior, as a passport to their entrance into the mansion where God and Christ are—I with you and you with me. I cannot go there without his consent. He holds the keys of that kingdom for the last dispensation—the keys to rule in the spirit-world; and he rules there triumphantly…” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, October 9, 1859 (more…)

July 21 — Beholding God. Moses 1:11 “But now mine own eyes have beheld God; but not my natural, but my spiritual eyes, for my natural eyes could not have beheld; for I should have withered and died in his presence; but his glory was upon me; and I beheld his face, for I was transfigured before him.”

Joseph Smith Testimony 1:17 ”It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!” (more…)

July 20 — Lying for the Lord. Inside the Mind of Joseph Smith: Psychobiography and the Book of Mormon, Introduction p. xliii f28 “My duty as a member of the Council of the Twelve is to protect what is most unique about the LDS church, namely the authority of priesthood, testimony regarding the restoration of the gospel, and the divine mission of the Savior. Everything may be sacrificed in order to maintain the integrity of those essential facts. Thus, if Mormon Enigma reveals information that is detrimental to the reputation of Joseph Smith, then it is necessary to try to limit its influence and that of its authors.” – Robert D. Anderson (more…)

July 14 — Stick of Judah, Stick of Ephraim. Mormon Doctrine, p. 535 “Ezekiel, in foretelling the preparation and coming forth of the Book of Mormon, called it the stick of Ephraim, and the stick of Joseph in the hand of Ephraim. In similar imagery he called the Bible the stick of Judah. The promise was that these two records would become one stick in the Lord’s hand in the day of the gathering of Israel. (Ezek. 37:15-28.)” (more…)
