Today we’re looking at a little known event in Mormon history, the story of Jane Elizabeth Manning James. Jane was a ‘free black’ who joined the Church in the late 1830’s and ended up crossing the plains with Brigham Young’s outfit.

This thought of the day came about after speaking with an uncle of mine earlier this week and our conversation regarding my great-grandmother’s ethnicity.
After we ended our call I began wondering once again why the Church would’ve allowed this side of my family into their exclusive priesthood back in the late 1800’s when they emigrated here. Half my family qualifies for the very Mormon coveted status of ‘white and delightsome’ and the other half…well, not so much. They’re black Welsh. Oops.
This topic has been the thorn in my side for as long as I can remember. I prayed and repented countless times as a child for my so-called rejection of Jesus in the pre-existence. My coloring was a sure sign of early apostasy on my part and to say that shame ran deep would be an understatement.

When Martin Luther King’s speech took place fifty years ago today, I was four months shy of being born. That doesn’t mean his words don’t carry as much weight for me or others not born in that era because they do! Reverend King’s speech has stood as a hallmark of all speeches – ever.

In my quest to get things organized I created another research page. I pray it’ll be of use and another easy access point for gathering the info you need. We have a total of over 300 pages filled with roughly 2,800 articles on everything Mormon. Remembering where I put every article is becoming more of an issue so I’m gathering by category and putting them on the sidebar. I’ve been blessed with a good memory, but….
So hang a right over to the sidebar and look for the logo you see with this post and it’ll have all our info on this horrible problem in the Mormon Church or you can just access it here.

“All Are Alike Unto God” is the title of a speech given at BYU by the LDS Apostle Bruce McConkie 
in August of 1978. The speech was given as an address to members of the Church to explain the recent change in Church membership requirements. Yet oddly enough, neither the speech nor the prophecy really changed the heart of Mormonism.

No Priesthood for Cain until Abel has His Own Planet
The Church and the Negro, pg 48-49; “It was a great tragedy for Abel to be killed and thereby prevented from having any offspring. It is written that the blessings of exaltation consist in “the continuation of the family unit in eternity” and a “continuation of the seeds forever and ever.” Abel was unrighteously kept from establishing any family ties or of being the progenitor of a great nation. The children that were to come to earth through the lineage of Abel had to be redirected through other lines. Abel was thus denied a tremendous blessing of having millions of spirits descending from him. Until Abel can have seed and until they have an opportunity of receiving the Priesthood, Cain’s descendants will not be allowed to have that Priesthood. Wilford Woodruff tells us, “…until the seed of Abel shall be redeemed…Cain shall not receive the priesthood, until the time of that (seed of Abel’s) redemption.
The obvious question is, “When will Abel’s seed be redeemed?” It will first of all be necessary that Abel marry, and then be resurrected, and ultimately exalted in the highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom so that he can have a continuation of his seed. It will then be necessary for Abel to create an earth for his spirit children to come to and experience mortality. These children will have to be “redeemed” or resurrected. After the resurrection or redemption of Abel’s seed, Cain’s descendants, the Negroes, will then be allowed to posses the Priesthood.”

Wilford Woodruff, His Life and Labors, pg 587; “There is one peculiar characteristic noticeable in the journal of Wilford Woodruff, it is that hopeful, joyful spirit that dwells with ever increasing satisfaction upon the things that are good and uplifting…He said in his journal of October, that year, that “Aunt Jane,” the colored sister, had been to see him. She was anxious to go through the Temple and receive the higher ordinances of the gospel. President Woodruff blessed her for her constant, never changing devotion to the gospel, but explained to her her disadvantages as one of the descendants of Cain. In after years when President Joseph F. Smith preached the funeral sermon of this same faithful woman he declared that she would in the resurrection attain the longings of her soul and become a white and beautiful person.”

Answers to Gospel Questions 2:188; “Kindly see chapters 15 and 16, in The Way to Perfection, for further light in relation to the reason why the Negro cannot receive the priesthood. In brief, it is as follows: Because of transgression in the first estate which deprives him in this second estate. Since Cain slew his brother Abel in order to obtain all the rights of priesthood to descend through his lineage, the Lord decreed that the children of Cain should not have the privilege of bearing the priesthood until Abel had posterity who could have the priesthood and that will have to be in the far distant future. When this is accomplished on some other world, then the restrictions will be removed from the children of Cain who have been true in this “second” estate”.
