The Golden Plates of Mormonism

Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg. 555; “While the plates were in Joseph’s keeping, others saw them, including eleven witnesses whose testimonies appear in all editions of the book.  Various descriptions provided by eyewitnesses suggest that the plates may have been made of a gold alloy, measured about 6 inches by 8 inches (15.2 cm by 20.3 cm), were 6 inches (15.2 cm) thick, and weighed about 50 pounds (22.7 kg).”

Mosiah 8:9; “And for a testimony that the things that they had said are true they have brought twenty-four plates which are filled with engravings, and they are of pure gold.”

Today we’re looking at the gold plates and Joseph Smith’s character.  Where are the plates today?  Were they made of gold or something resembling gold?  The many descriptions of the plates remind me of Joseph Smith.  Some say he was the real deal just as those plates, while others tell a story of a man that looks good on the outside, but when you get up close it becomes clear all that glitters isn’t gold.

False Prophecies by False Prophets

When we don’t follow God’s word man’s idea of righteousness goes every which way.  Case in point is Joseph Smith and what he did in 1830.  With his idea of God people went their own ways after his death and today we see literally hundreds of different kinds of Mormonism rearing their ugly heads.

The case in Texas took another turn this week.  Warren Jeffs, the self proclaimed prophet of the polygamous group FLDS, issued a new prophecy.   Now he’s predicted the walls of the prison are going to fall down around him and until then no one is allowed to have sexual relations in their marriages.  If you’re caught doing so the punishment is swift and severe; it’s excommunication for you.

Let’s pray the reports are true that people are finally leaving.  And although that may seem like a good thing we also need to pray they’ll come to know the truth about Jesus and get saved!

Council of gods

D&C 121:32; “According to that which was ordained in the midst of the Council of the Eternal God of all other gods before this world was, that should be reserved unto the finishing and the end thereof, when every man shall enter into his eternal presence and into his immortal rest.”

Who was the gospel first given to & when?

The Church teaches that Adam was the first person to ever teach and spread the gospel on earth.  The Mormon Apostle Mark Petersen says this in his book

Adam, Who Is He, pg. 9; “Adam received the holy priesthood and was commanded by the Lord to teach his children the principles of the gospel. Moreover, Adam was baptized for the remission of his sins, for the same principles by which men are saved now were the principles by which men were saved in the beginning. In that day as many as repented and were baptized received the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands. Adam made all these things known to his sons and daughters.” (Doctrines of Salvation, Bookcraft, 1956, 3:81-82.)”

2 Thessalonians 2:9-11; “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.”

My heart seriously grieves for those in the Church like my mother who would believe the tales of these false prophets and false teachers.

Question: who would be there to lay hands on Adam for the gift of the Holy Ghost?  Who would know the word gospel since it wasn’t used until the time of Christ?

Why would Adam be baptized if the institution of sacrifices had just made its first appearance?

What did Jesus’ words mean in John when He told the disciples He was going to send the Comforter to them if Adam had already received Him?  See John 16:7-8.

Baptism for the Dead and being Born Again

I often wonder what Mormons think of the passage of scripture in John when Nicodemus asked Jesus what he must do to be born again.  While we’ve explored this issue in our Mormon Dilemmas section before, today I began wondering about another angle to this scenario.

If Jesus told Nicodemus he had to be born again then how are dead people born again?

John 3:3; “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

The Mormon Church teaches that they can’t be saved without their dead and the dead can’t be saved without members doing works for them in the temple.

D&C 128:18; “…baptism for the dead. For we without them cannot be made perfect; neither can they without us be made perfect.”

So how can a dead person be born again?  Remember, we’re not talking about being spiritually dead, but a literal dead person.

The Mormons I’ve spoken with have told me the person who is dead has the choice of accepting or rejecting that which was done for them in the temple.  But this doesn’t answer the question so it’s something I’d keep asking them about.

I also wonder how they feel about Moroni 10:26 and 2 Nephi 9:38 in light of the Doctrine and Covenants passage listed above.

Moroni 10:26; “And wo unto them who shall do these things away and die, for they die in their sins, and they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God; and I speak it according to the words of Christ; and I lie not.”

2 Nephi 9:38; “And, in fine, wo unto all those who die in their sins; for they shall return to God, and behold his face, and remain in their sins.”

Baptism, When Did it Begin

Articles of Faith, pg. 110; “The Establishment of Baptism dates from the time of the earliest history of the race. When the Lord manifested Himself to Adam after the expulsion from the Garden of Eden, He promised the patriarch of the race: “If thou wilt turn unto me, and hearken unto my voice, and believe, and repent of all thy transgressions, and be baptized, even in water, in the name of mine Only Begotten Son…” – James Talmage

Israel in 600 BC – the Bible vs. the Book of Mormon

Today’s scenario of false prophecies is the kind that jumps right out at you and confirms there’s something fishy in Denmark, or in this case, Israel.

For 400 years Israel was in disobedience towards God and for a long time God had warned the Israelites there would be a price to pay for their willful disregard of His commandments.

The United Order

United Order should be everlasting

D&C 104:1; “Revelation to Joseph Smith, April 23, 1834. History of the Church 2:54-60. Verily I say unto you, my friends, I give unto you counsel, and a commandment, concerning all the properties which belong to the order which I commanded to be organized and established, to be a united order, and an everlasting order for the benefit of my church, and for the salvation of men until I come.”

Arrogance of Joseph Smith

History of the Church 6:408-409; “Come on! ye prosecutors! ye false swearers! All hell, boil over! Ye burning mountains, roll down your lava! for I will come out on the top at last. I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet.”

David Patten to Fulfill Mission

Prophecy given in Far West, Missouri, April 17, 1838.  Also see HC 3:23.

D&C 114:1; “Verily thus saith the Lord: It is wisdom in my servant David W. Patten, that he settle up all his business as soon as he possibly can, and make a disposition of his merchandise, that he may perform a mission unto me next spring, in company with others, even twelve including himself, to testify of my name and bear glad tidings unto all the world.”

Angels Handshakes and Red Haired Angels

D&C 129:1-3 “There are two kinds of beings in heaven, namely: Angels, who are resurrected personages, having bodies of flesh and bones—For instance, Jesus said: Handle me and see, for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.  3 Secondly: the spirits of just men made perfect, they who are not resurrected, but inherit the same glory.”

ZION MOVED!!

Spirit of man sexually begotten by Heavenly Father

Latter-day Prophets Speak: Selections from the Sermons and Writings of Church Presidents, Book 5; “There is not a person here today but what is a son or a daughter of that Being. In the spirit world their spirits were first begotten and brought forth, and they lived there with their parents for ages before they came here. This, perhaps, is hard for many to believe, but it is the greatest nonsense in the world not to believe it. If you do not believe it, cease to call Him Father; and when you pray, pray to some other character. -Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 4:216, February 8, 1857”

Multiple gods and People from Other Planets

Journal of Discourses 7:286; “Here let me state to all philosophers of every class upon the earth, When you tell me that father Adam was made as we make adobies [sic] from the earth, you tell me what I deem an idle tale. When you tell me that the beasts of the field were produced in that manner, you are speaking idle words devoid of meaning. There is no such thing in all the eternities where the Gods dwell. Mankind are here because they are the offspring of parents who were first brought here from another planet, and power was given them to propagate their species, and they were commanded to multiply and replenish the earth.” – Brigham Young, October 9, 1859, Salt Lake City

Location of Garden of Eden

Answers to Gospel Questions 2:95 lists a question from a member of the Church and the answer that is given by Joseph Fielding Smith, the tenth president of the LDS Church, son of the sixth president of the LDS Church, Joseph F. Smith.  In this particular “Q & A” I found his answer so unbelievable that I had to share it with you.

““I have a friend who is interested enough in the doctrines of the Church to ask many questions. From someone she obtained the information that we believe that the Garden of Eden was in the state of Missouri, and she asked me about it. I had always understood this to be what we believe and I told her so. She wanted to know how we explain what is in the Bible, where it tells about the river in the garden which divided into four more, the Pison, Gison, Hiddekel, and Euphrates. We know where the Euphrates is today, and the Bible map shows that the land of Havilah is located in Ethiopia. Could you please explain our views?””
