Christianity and the Body of Christ

For the next few days we’ll be looking at what the LDS Church has taught its members about Christianity.  I feel this is important to gain an understanding of where the average Mormon is coming from, so here we go!

Authority to Preach

History of the Church 5:256-7; “Whenever there has been a righteous man on earth unto whom God revealed His word and gave power and authority to administer in His name, and where there is a priest of God—a minister who has power and authority from God to administer in the ordinances of the gospel and officiate in the priesthood of God, there is the kingdom of God; and, in consequence of rejecting the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Prophets whom God hath sent, the judgments of God have rested upon people, cities, and nations, in various ages of the world, which was the case with the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, that were destroyed for rejecting the Prophets.” – Joseph Smith

August 14 – Isaiah 43:10-11; ‘Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.  I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.’

Arrogance of Joseph Smith

History of the Church 6:408-409; “Come on! ye prosecutors! ye false swearers! All hell, boil over! Ye burning mountains, roll down your lava! for I will come out on the top at last. I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet.”

Kingdom of God was the Garden of Eden in America

Journal of Discourses 8:196; “In the beginning, after this earth was prepared for man, the Lord commenced his work upon what is now called the American continent, where the Garden of Eden was made. In the days of Noah, in the days of the floating of the ark, he took the people to another part of the earth: the earth was divided, and there he set up his kingdom.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, October 7, 1860

False Prophecies of Joseph Smith and the Twelve LDS Apostles

History of the Church 2:381-382; “And I finally saw the Twelve in the celestial kingdom of God. I also beheld the redemption of Zion, and many things which the tongue of man cannot describe in full…Further Visions and Revelations.  The visions of heaven were opened to them also. Some of them saw the face of the Savior, and others were ministered unto by holy angels, and the spirit of prophecy and revelation was poured out in mighty power; and loud hosannas, and glory to God in the highest, saluted the heavens, for we all communed with the heavenly host. And I saw in my vision all of the Presidency in the celestial kingdom of God, and many others that were present.” – Joseph Smith, Thursday, January 21, 1836

Spirit of man sexually begotten by Heavenly Father

Latter-day Prophets Speak: Selections from the Sermons and Writings of Church Presidents, Book 5; “There is not a person here today but what is a son or a daughter of that Being. In the spirit world their spirits were first begotten and brought forth, and they lived there with their parents for ages before they came here. This, perhaps, is hard for many to believe, but it is the greatest nonsense in the world not to believe it. If you do not believe it, cease to call Him Father; and when you pray, pray to some other character. -Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 4:216, February 8, 1857”

Blacks in the Mormon Church

On February 26, 2005 I saw an article on my Google-alert that I just couldn’t ignore.  It said; ‘Latter-day Saints face race issue’.  This subject has always fascinated me so I clicked on the article to find out that a man by the name of Darron Smith, has written a book entitled; ‘Black and Mormon’.

John the Apostle Captured by Assyrians

Encyclopedia of JS Teachings, pg. 402; “The Spirit of the Lord fell upon Joseph in an unusual manner, and he prophesied that John the Revelator was then among the Ten Tribes of Israel who had been led away by Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, to prepare them for their return from their long dispersion.”

False Prophecies of Joseph Smith, The Trinity

Joseph created a problem for himself when he started declaring that God is an exalted man.  In the beginning of his self-proclaimed career as a prophet the majority of his teachings went along with orthodox, biblical Christianity.

 This Generation Is Destroyed (1830)

Joseph Smith Testimony, 1:45; “He commenced, and again related the very same things which he had done at his first visit, without the least variation; which having done, he informed me of great judgments which were coming upon the earth, with great desolations by famine, sword, and pestilence; and that these grievous judgments would come on the earth in this generation. Having related these things, he again ascended as he had done before.”

Abrahamic Covenant is a Dilemma for the Mormon Church

The dilemma this time is something I wish every single Mormon knew about.  It’s imperative as a Christian to know who Abraham was.  Who was he, where did he live, why did God like him, when did he live, and what significance does his life story play in Christianity, why do I need to know?  What is the Abrahamic Covenant?  What does it mean for me as a Christian today?

Familiar Spirits

Gospel Doctrine, pg. 435; “We are told by the Prophet Joseph Smith, that “there are no angels who minister to this earth but those who do belong or have belonged to it.” Hence, when messengers are sent to minister to the inhabitants of this earth, they are not strangers, but from the ranks of our kindred, friends, and fellow-beings and fellow-servants. The ancient prophets who died were those who came to visit their fellow creatures upon the earth.”
