May 25 – Is God’s Canon Full? Revelation 22:18-19; “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”

OnThisDayinMormonHistory.com; Apr 23, 1843 – “Robert Wiley “finds” six metal, bell-shaped plates covered with hieroglyphs while digging in a mound near Kinderhook, Illinois. The plates are found with a skeleton eleven feet below the top of the mound. There are “two mormon elders” among the dozen people witnessing the excavation. The plates are brought to Joseph Smith who says “they contain the history of the person with whom they were found and he was a descendant of Ham through the loins of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and that he received his kingdom from the ruler of heaven and earth.” In 1855 and 1879 associates of Wiley claim that the plates were a hoax gotten up by Wiley and friends to fool Smith. There is debate about the validity of the “hoax” stories until 1981 when the plates are subjected to testing which conclusively verifies their 19th-century origin and details given by the hoaxers in their manufacture.” (more…)

Leaving Mormonism brings many new discoveries, some more shocking than others. This particular subject matter was one of the most surprising for me based on its brazen audacity to openly lie to the Mormon people.

Little did I know as a Mormon, the Church has spent an extraordinary amount of time retro-engineering their beloved founder’s prophetic wisdom. Not only have they done this with their signature canon, the BoM, but they went so far as to touch up the Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price, Joe Smith’s History, and even the History of the Church as well.

We know they’ve rewritten the canon simply because they’ve told us so in their release of the ‘Joseph Smith Papers’, which contains sidebar notes telling us of the revisions.

Today we’re checking out their ‘handiwork’ by comparing the Book of Commandments written in 1833, with the Doctrine and Covenants which they’ve dated as 1828. (As an FYI, their spelling errors have been left intact.)

D&C 61:14-19; “Behold, I, the Lord, in the beginning blessed the waters; but in the last days, by the mouth of my servant John, I cursed the waters. 15 Wherefore, the days will come that no flesh shall be safe upon the waters. 16 And it shall be said in days to come that none is able to go up to the land of Zion upon the waters, but he that is upright in heart. 17 And, as I, the Lord, in the beginning cursed the land, even so in the last days have I blessed it, in its time, for the use of my saints, that they may partake the fatness thereof. 18 And now I give unto you a commandment that what I say unto one I say unto all, that you shall forewarn your brethren concerning these waters, that they come not in journeying upon them, lest their faith fail and they are caught in snares; 19 I, the Lord, have decreed, and the destroyer rideth upon the face thereof, and I revoke not the decree.” – August 12, 1831

Wilford Woodruff’s Journal: Volume 7, p. 83 & Today in Mormon History; “– 145 years ago… – Mar 30, 1873 — [Wilford Woodruff] Again Presidet Young said Joseph the Prophet told me that the garden of Eden was in Jackson Co Missouri, & when Adam was driven out of the garden of Eden He went about 40 miles to the Place which we Named Adam Ondi Ahman, & there built an Altar of Stone & offered Sacrifize. That Altar remains to this day. I saw it as Adam left it as did many others, & through all the revolutions of the world that Altar had not been disturbed. Joseph also said that when the City of Enoch fled & was translated it was whare the gulf of Mexico now is. It left that gulf a body of water.” – Also see: Wilford Woodruff’s Journal: 1833-1898 Typescript, Volumes 1-9, Edited by Scott G. Why Mormons Can’t Celebrate Good Friday

Originally posted March 2013

I’m certain I’m not alone when I say that Good Friday always gives us lots to think upon and pray about! Each of us has our own list of reasons why we’re grateful God intervened in our life and we each carry our own set of memories why this day is special for us.

One of the most memorable experiences for me dates back to my days in Junior High School of all things. At the time I had become friends with a handful of other girls and as it turned out I was the only Mormon. My small group of friends included a Catholic, a Presbyterian, an Episcopalian and a Methodist. I began noticing my Catholic friend only ate fish on Fridays and while all the girls had their own set of doctrinal creeds they held dear, their customs afforded me a front row seat to other cultures right there in the heart of Utah Mormonism. I began wondering what it’d be like to attend a church that had a cross somewhere on the building.

“We can also intentionally deceive others by a gesture or a look, by silence, or by telling only part of the truth.” – Gospel Principles, p 181.

The quote above comes from an LDS teaching manual. Ironically, holding back the truth is one of the trademarks in Mormonism.

As I’ve always said, I publish these things not out of animosity, nor to bash the Mormon people. On the contrary, my heart hurts for them, and they deserve to have the truth presented in a manner that glorifies the Lord.

It’s painfully obvious Joe Smith took names in the Bible, tweaked them a bit, and inserted them into his own version of the gospel he dubbed ‘The Book of Mormon’. What breaks my heart about his nefarious deed is the effect it’s had on many levels.

2 Samuel 22:31; “As for God, his way is perfect; The word of the Lord is tried: He is a buckler to all them that trust in him.”

Despite Joseph Smith’s illustrious promise the Book of Mormon is ‘the most correct book on the face of the earth’, one can find thousands upon thousands of errors. We’re looking at just one of those notorious faux pas’ here.

Today’s mistake has to do with the wrong info for locations. Here we go!

2 Nephi 19:1; “Nevertheless, the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali, and afterwards did more grievously afflict by the way of the Red Sea beyond Jordan in Galilee of the nations.

Proverbs 17:28; “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.”

The proverb above is an ad hoc version from the KJV, but still worthy of consideration. I’ve no doubt it was thought of many times in the days of Joseph Smith. It’s a shame not everyone has applied it to their own livs…

In today’s Mormon topic, we’re looking at three types of people. The first group consists of the vast majority of humanity. More times than not, people come and go in this life without leaving a sign they were here on earth. Still others, are bound and determined to have their voices heard, whether good, or bad. Such was the case with Smith, who even prophesied as much.

Colossians 3:9; “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds”.

Our post today comes courtesy of an ex-Mormon, Carl, who’s training to become a pastor! PTL!

As he was looking over his copy of an 1830 Book of Mormon he immediately realized the contradictions  of what he’d been taught as a child growing up in Mormonism.

Mosiah 3:11; “For behold, and also his blood atoneth for the sins of those who have fallen by the transgression of Adam, who have died not knowing the will of God concerning them, or who have ignorantly sinned.”

Article of Faith #2; “We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.”

Mark 7:7 “Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”

Jesus’ warning is a good reminder of what pseudo-Christian groups have done to lead people away from Him. These groups will assign and malign His precious word by using all, or part of what He teaches in an effort to drag everyone down with them.

Those who’ve done this typically don’t stop at just God’s word, oh no! They’ll also dip into stealing the works of others as well.

TodayinMormonHistory.com; “– 50 years ago today – Nov 27,1967 — New York Metropolitan Museum of Art gives to LDS church the original Egyptian papyri upon which Joseph Smith based “Book of Abraham” in Pearl of Great Price. Scholars and church officials authenticate papyri as the same used by Smith. Apostle N. Eldon Tanner states the discovery of the papyri will finally prove Joseph Smith could translate ancient documents.

Unfortunately, Egyptologists, LDS and non-LDS, verify that these papyri are typical “Book of Breathings” in form and content.

Church officials begin repressing the story that the original papyri have been discovered and are in their possession. –– Quinn, D. Michael, The Mormon Hierarchy: Extensions of Power, Appendix 5, Selected Chronology of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1848-1996.”
