Whom Did the Lord Choose?

Ensign, Jan. 2006, 34-35; “In a surprisingly short time, the [ancient] Church disassembled. Without Apostles, the Church lost its anchor and began to drift on every wind of doctrine. Spiritual gifts disappeared, revelations ceased, the keys to the priesthood were lost, ordinances changed. Ultimately, the purity of our Lord’s gospel began to meld with other doctrines, beliefs, and practices. Philosophies and political influences began to infiltrate and transform the Church.

“During the centuries that followed, the light dimmed even further. President Thomas S. Monson . . . explained: ‘The dark ages of history seemed never to end.’ . . .

“At first a few great reformers began to speak out. When John Wycliffe completed the first English translation of the entire Bible, those in authority did all they could to destroy it. Many of Wycliffe’s followers were severely punished.

“Jan Hus, another fearless reformer who spoke against corruption in the church, was chained by the neck to a stake and burned.

“Thousands of others heroically searched for the truth and risked their all as they sought to worship God according to the dictates of their consciences.” – Joseph B. Wirthlin, “The Restoration and Faith”

Brigham Young’s words more than 150 years ago seems less than prophetic or inspiring in today’s day and age when he said the following;

Journal of Discourses 7:286; “Mankind are here because they are the offspring of parents who were first brought here from another planet, and power was given them to propagate their species, and they were commanded to multiply and replenish the earth.” – Brigham Young, October 9, 1859, Salt Lake City

It gives the line “what planet are you from” a whole new meaning.

Bible and Book of Mormon Authenticate Each Other

Ensign, Nov. 2007, 43; “Scriptural witnesses authenticate each other. This concept was explained long ago when a prophet wrote that the Book of Mormon was ‘written for the intent that ye may believe [the Bible]; and if ye believe [the Bible] ye will believe [the Book of Mormon] also’ (Mormon 7:9). Each book refers to the other. Each book stands as evidence that God lives and speaks to His children by revelation to His prophets.

Love for the Book of Mormon expands one’s love for the Bible and vice versa. Scriptures of the Restoration do not compete with the Bible; they complement the Bible. We are indebted to martyrs who gave their lives so that we could have the Bible. It establishes the everlasting nature of the gospel and of the plan of happiness. The Book of Mormon restores and underscores biblical doctrines such as tithing, the temple, the Sabbath day, and the priesthood.” – Russell M. Nelson, “Scriptural Witnesses”

“The Gospel is Simple”

New Era, July 2010, 3; The gospel is so very simple when we understand it properly. It is always right, it is always good, it is always uplifting. Obedience to gospel principles brings forth joy and happiness. Disobedience has a day of reckoning and will only bring forth heartache, misery, strife, and unhappiness.” – L. Tom Perry, “What Should We Do on the Sabbath?”

Priesthood Power – What is it?

Ensign, May 2010, 48; “We have this priesthood power, and we should all be prepared to use it properly.” – Dallin H. Oaks, “Healing the Sick”

Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg. 1134; “The word “priesthood” has several meanings for Latter-day Saints:1. Priesthood is power, the power of God, a vital source of eternal strength and energy delegated to men to act in all things for the well-being of mankind, both in the world and out of it (DS 3:80; Romney, p. 43). Priesthood is authority, the exclusive right to act in the name of God as his authorized agents and to perform ordinances for the purpose of opening certain spiritual blessings to all individuals.”

What is a Saint?

New Era, Dec. 2009, 2; “What does it mean to be a Saint? In the Lord’s Church, the members are Latter-day Saints, and they attempt to emulate the Savior, follow His teachings, and receive saving ordinances in order to live in the celestial kingdom with God the Father and our Savior Jesus Christ (see 2 Nephi 9:18).” – Quentin L. Cook, “Are You a Latter-day Saint?”

Oh Mitt, Mitt, Mitt, Mitt, Mitt…

During the debate in Iowa tonight (December 10, 2011) Mr. Romney told the audience and all of America that he served as a pastor for his church.

My how quickly the tide turns in the world of changing vocabulary with the Mormons.

Mitt Romney has NEVER and I do mean NEVER been a pastor in his church.  There are NO PASTORS IN MORMONISM.

Bishop, yes, pastor no.

Nice try Mitt.  Throwing out Christian terminology in the Midwest looks good, but lying looks worse than just telling the plain ol’ truth.

Why can’t you just tell the truth?

Perfection of Individuals and the Family

Is Sanctification through your works or the Spirit working in you?

Ensign, May 2010, pgs 9-10; “Every law and principle and power, every belief, every ordinance and ordination, every covenant, every sermon and every sacrament, every counsel and correction, the sealings, the calls, the releases, the service—all these have as their ultimate purpose the perfection of the individual and the family, for the Lord has said, ‘This is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man’ (Moses 1:39).” – Boyd K. Packer, The Power of the Priesthood

Jesus the Only Begotten?

Gospel Through the Ages, pg. 15;The appointment of Jesus to be the Savior of the world was contested by one of the other sons of God. He was called Lucifer, son of the morning. Haughty, ambitious, and covetous of power and glory, this spirit-brother of Jesus desperately tried to become the Savior of mankind. At the great council he proposed a new plan of salvation, event, the Lord revealed the following to Moses…

The Creation of Man

Life Before, pg. 91; God gave his children their free agency even in the spirit world, by which the individual spirits had the privilege, just as men have here, of choosing the good and rejecting the evil, or partaking of the evil to suffer the consequences of their sins. Because of this, some even there were more faithful than others in keeping the commandments of the Lord. Some were of greater intelligence than others, as we find it here, and were honored accordingly….The spirits of men were not equal. They may have had an equal start, and we know they were all innocent in the beginning; but the right of free agency which was given to them enabled some to outstrip others…” – Brent Top

It’s nice to see there are people in the public eye who do acknowledge that Mormonism is not Christianity.  And sometimes it’s even surprising to find out that news sources you didn’t think would care actually take an objective view and tell the truth.

The Absolute Certainty of the Restoration

Ensign, Nov. 2009, 37; “Some are willing to set aside the precious gospel truths restored by Joseph Smith because they get diverted on some historical issue or some scientific hypothesis not central to their exaltation, and in so doing they trade their spiritual birthright for a mess of pottage. They exchange the absolute certainty of the Restoration for a doubt, and in that process they fall into the trap of losing faith in the many things they do know because of a few things they do not know.” – Tad R. Callister, “Joseph Smith—Prophet of the Restoration”

Jesus Christ Son of God After the Manner of the Flesh…

Today I’m wondering how the Mormon Church can believe Mary was still a virgin when Jesus was born if they believe the following about the whole born of a virgin scenario…

The following list of teachings from the LDS Church tells the real truth about the belief system in Mormonism.  When the Mormons say He is Jesus Christ the Son of God after the manner of the flesh, this is what they’re referring to.

The Restored Gospel

Ensign, Nov. 2009, 37; “In many ways the gospel of Jesus Christ is like a 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle. When Joseph Smith came on the scene, perhaps 100 pieces were in place. Then Joseph Smith came along and put many of the other 900 pieces in place so that people could say, ‘Oh, now I understand where I came from, why I am here, and where I am going.’ As for Joseph Smith’s role in the Restoration, the Lord defined it clearly: ‘This generation shall have my word through you’ (D&C 5:10).”

Salvation of the Dead and the Living

New Era, Aug. 2009, 5; “If we can look back through the generations, we see those who helped us to get where we are now—those who forged the way before us, whether they were members of the Church or not. And in the restored gospel we realize even more deeply our responsibility to link them to us through the ordinances of the temple. In a letter from the Prophet Joseph Smith to the members of the Church, we read: ‘These are principles in relation to the dead and the living that cannot be lightly passed over. . . . For their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation, . . . they without us cannot be made perfect—neither can we without our dead be made perfect’ (D&C 128:15; see also verse 18).” – Neil L. Andersen, Looking Back and Looking Forward

Jude 1:24-25; “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, 25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.”

The Only True and Living Church and a Grove of Trees

Ensign, Nov. 2009, pg. 37; “If someone turns from these restored doctrines, where will he go to learn the true nature of God as taught in the grove of trees? Where will he go to find the doctrines of the premortal existence, baptism for the dead, and eternal marriage? And where will he go to find the sealing powers that can bind husbands and wives and children beyond the grave?

“Through Joseph Smith have been restored all the powers, keys, teachings, and ordinances necessary for salvation and exaltation.” – Tad R. Callister, Joseph Smith – Prophet of the Restoration

Oppositions and Contradictions

Ensign, May 2010, pg. 79; ’Men are, that they might have joy’ (2 Nephi 2:25) and ‘for it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things’ (2 Nephi 2:11) are not contradictory; they are complementary.” – Elder Donald L. Hallstrom, “Turn to the Lord”

An article in the Ensign grabbed my attention written by Elder Hallstrom called “Turn to the Lord”.  Mr. Hallstrom’s speech/article ranked right up there with some of the most confusing subject matters I’ve read in a long time.

Humble Following or Misguided Trust?

The lengths to which members of the LDS Church will go never ceases to amaze me when defending the position they take about Joseph Smith.  I could write volumes upon volumes of books containing testimonials of how wonderful Mr. Smith is and if it weren’t for Mr. Smith then no one could be saved.
