Discussion 1 – The Plan of our Heavenly Father
This discussion lays the foundation for all six discussions. Investigators are taught about God (Heavenly Father), and Jesus. They are then introduced to Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon.
The six principles investigators learn about in this lesson are:
The plan of our Heavenly Father
The divine sonship of Jesus Christ
How the plan has been revealed
The Prophet Joseph Smith:
The Book of Mormon-Another Testament of Jesus Christ
The Holy Ghost- A witness to the truth

Gordon B. Hinckley boldly proclaimed none else but God Almighty came down to earth and told Joe Smith all of Christianity was wrong. He also asserted the entire church rests itself on the validity of this ‘glorious first vision’. It’s a dismal outlook on life if this is what the Church is banking on. His claim gives investigators many reasons to reject their church. There’s no less than eleven different versions of the first vision.
Why don’t they set their validity on Jesus?
General Conference, ‘What are People Asking about Us?,’ October 1998; “Our entire case as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, rests on the validity of this glorious First Vision” (Also see Church News, Oct.
10, 1998, p.17).

Because there are so many stories about this activity in Smith’s life it’s hard to keep them all straight and in my quest to stay sane I’ve found organization is key so I’ve put them all in one place for easy access.
If you need info on any of Smith’s peculiar visions in the future you can find them by looking over to the right and scrolling down to “Visions of Joseph Smith” or clicking here.
If you’re LDS I want to be clear about our objective in publishing these things. I/we don’t do this out of animosity or to bash the Mormon people. On the contrary we do this out of our deep love and concern. We believe you deserve to know the truth and in order for you to make a wise decision about your eternal life it’s best to be informed.
With Love in Christ;

First Vision According to John Taylor
Journal of Discourses 10:130-131; “How did this state of things called Mormonism originate? We read that an angel came down and revealed himself to Joseph Smith and manifested unto him in vision the true position of the world in a religious point of view. He was surrounded with light and glory while the heavenly messenger communicated these things unto him, after a series of visitations and communications from the Apostle Peter and others who held the authority of the holy Priesthood, not only on the earth formerly but in the heavens afterwards.” – John Taylor, Salt Lake City, March 1, 1863

Joseph Smith’s Revelations
Discourses of Brigham Young, pg 461; “Joseph continued to receive revelation upon revelation, ordinance upon ordinance, truth upon truth, until he obtained all that was necessary for the salvation of the human family. All the inhabitants of the earth are called of God; they are called to repent and be baptized for the remission of sins. 16:42.”
John 11:26; “And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.”

Thought of the Day about Mormonism and Joseph Smith’s First Vision
Mormonism today is not what it was when Joseph Smith founded it. While the Church prides itself on receiving continuing revelation, there’s something to be said about being truthful in the process.
Several questions must arise in the minds of anyone with a vested interest of the Church and this goes for those contemplating the contradictory history of the Church to TBMs (True Blue Mormons).

Moroni or Nephi, Who Visited Joseph that Night?
Introductory page of D&C 1976, 3rd paragraph; “This took place in the early spring of 1820. In September, 1823, and at later times, Joseph Smith received visitations from Moroni, an angel of light, who revealed the resting place of the ancient record from which The Book of Mormon was afterward translated.”

History of Joseph Smith
Evidences and Reconciliations, pg 334; “Because the earliest available written or printed account of this vision is dated 1838 and 1839, some enemies of the Church have cast doubt upon the authenticity of the date claimed for the vision. They have suggested that the vision was invented by the Prophet in 1838, when he set about to write the formal history of the Church. This not only implies that Joseph Smith lied, but also that the facts of history to be acceptable must be written and circulated at the time of their occurrence. This is a preposterous claim, made only by enemies of the Church to mislead those who are unacquainted with Mormon history. Whether the story of the first vision existed in written form in the early days of the Church is not known.”

Ensign, Nov. 2009, pg. 37; “If someone turns from these restored doctrines, where will he go to learn the true nature of God as taught in the grove of trees? Where will he go to find the doctrines of the premortal existence, baptism for the dead, and eternal marriage? And where will he go to find the sealing powers that can bind husbands and wives and children beyond the grave?
“Through Joseph Smith have been restored all the powers, keys, teachings, and ordinances necessary for salvation and exaltation.” – Tad R. Callister, Joseph Smith – Prophet of the Restoration
