1 Peter 5:2; “Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind.”

Journal of Discourses 4:112; “I wish the most strict attention of the entire congregation… I shall require the people to be perfectly still, while they are here and we are trying to speak to them. Let there be no talking, whispering, nor shuffling of feet. …

Kid cryingI will say, in regard to the sisters who bring children here to make a noise, they have never yet sufficiently thought, nor sufficiently considered their own place in this world, nor the place of others, to know that there is any other person living on the earth  but themselves; and they think, when they hear people talk, that it is a noise through a dark veil. I cannot say much for the education, based on good feeling, that such persons have.

Were I to describe it in a plain way, I should say that they are people of no breeding, that they were never bred but came up; that is about as good a character as I can afford to give to any mother that will keep a squalling child in a meeting. I have never said to the congregation, look and see who they are, for you may distinguish by your ears, without looking, the mothers that have had good teaching and been brought up in a civilized society. … We shall have large congregations during the Conference, and we wish perfect order maintained.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, October 5, 1856

Brigham YoungJournal of Discourses 5:331; “…Joseph B. Nobles once told a Methodist priest, after hearing him describe his god, that the god they worshipped was the “Mormons’” Devil—a beingNoble Joseph Bates without a body, whereas our God has a body, parts, and passions. The Devil was cursed and sent down from heaven. He has no body of his own; therefore he is constantly endeavoring to obtain possession of the tabernacles belonging to others…” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, October 7, 1857

Today’s post is a look at what leaders of the LDS Church have chosen to do with their time. It also serves as a reminder of this church’s foundation.

In all sincerity may we keep Colossians 3:17 in the forefront of our minds –

“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”

Cumorah's Cave Labans SwordWe all know the story of Joe Smith receiving gold plates from the angel of light, Moroni. What you may not be aware of is the collection of stories from early Mormons retelling Joe’s experience of when he went to Cumorah to give the plates back to Moroni.

Brigham YoungJournal of Discourses 4:297; “It was not for me to question whether Joseph was dictated by the Lord at all times and under all circumstances or not… He was called of God; God dictated him, and if He had a mind to leave him to himself and let him commit an error, that was no business of mine. And it was not for me to question it, if the Lord was disposed to let Joseph lead the people astray, for He had called him and instructed him to gather Israel and restore the Priesthood and kingdom to them. It was not my prerogative to call him in question with regard to any act of his life.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, March 29, 1857

stickman thinking 3Mormonism teaches upon exaltation, men will become gods of their own planets. See Mormon Dilemma 384.

Brigham Young taught that after men receive their own planet, they’re able to procreate with an exalted goddess wife, and beget spirit children.

Journal of Discourses 6:275; “After men have got their exaltations and their crowns—have become Gods, even the sons of God—are made Kings of kings and Lords of lords, they have the power then of propagating their species in spirit; and that is the first of their operations with regard to organizing a world.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, August 28, 1852

Mormon Decisions 10Journal of Discourses 1:108-109; “If you want to know what to doBrigham Young with a thief that you may find stealing, I say kill him on the spot, and never suffer him to commit another iniquity. I will prove by my works whether I can mete out justice to such persons, or not. I would consider it just as much my duty to do that, as to baptize a man for the remission of his sins.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, May 8, 1853

MMM2This year, 2015, marks the 158th ‘anniversary’ of a tragedy in Utah history I’m sure Mormons would rather forget. If you’re unfamiliar with the event, you can read about it in an article on our front page you can access here.

Today we’re asking Christians to pray that Mormons will be aware of this ugly scar on their church’s history, and question why this happened.

Mormon Decisions 10History of The Church 2:188-189; “The blessing of Brigham YoungBrigham Young was that he should be strong in body, that he might go forth and gather the elect, preparatory to the great day of the coming of the Lord; and that he might be strong and mighty, declaring the tidings to nations that know not God; that he may add ten talents; that he may come to Zion with many sheaves. He shall go forth from land and from sea to sea; and shall behold heavenly messengers going forth; and his life shall be prolonged; and the Holy Priesthood is conferred on him, that he may do wonders in the name of Jesus; that he may cast out devils, heal the sick, raise the dead, open the eyes of the blind, go forth from land to land and from sea to sea; and that heathen nations shall even call him God himself, if he do not rebuke them.”

Mormon Decisions 10Twenty years after the Mormons arrived in Salt Lake City Brigham Young delivered an eye opening sermon containing four main heresies we’ll take a quick look at today. Why the Saints didn’t kick these guys to the curb is a wonder indeed…

Heresy #1 –

Journal of Discourses 12:66-67; “…right here in the Quorum of the Twelve, if you ask one of its members…do you believe in the existence of a personage called God? “No, I do not,” says this Apostle. So you see there are schisms in our day…

salt lake mormon temple 2Discourses of Brigham Young, pg 53; “Everything in heaven, on earth, and in hell is organized for the benefit, advantage, and exaltation of intelligent beings; therefore there is nothing that is out of the pale of our faith. There is nothing, I may say, good or bad, light or darkness, truth or error, but what is to be controlled by intelligent beings…” – Brigham Young

Mormon Decisions 10Journal of Discourses 14:199; “There is no other people in the world that believe in and practice the Bible as strictly as the Latter-day Saints. None but the Latter-day Saints properly believe in the Lord Jesus Christ; no other people acknowledge him and keep his commandments; and yet they follow us up, their object, professedly, being to convert us to Christianity, but in reality it is to induce us to apostatize until they get the upper hand, that the Priesthood may again be destroyed from the earth.” – Brigham Young, Ogden, Utah, June 3, 1871

Brigham’s Uncertainty

Mormon Decisions 10Journal of Discourses 16:70; “I do not know that I shall have a wife or child in the resurrection. I have never had any thoughts or reflections upon this, or cared the first thing about it. All that I have had in my mind has been that it was my duty to do the will of God, and to labor to establish his kingdom on the earth. I do not love, serve or fear the Lord for the sake of getting rid of being damned, nor for the sake of getting some great gift or blessing in eternity, but purely because the principles which God has revealed for the salvation of the inhabitants of the earth are pure, holy and exalting in their nature.” – Brigham Young, Logan, Utah, June 28, 1873

Christianity in Dense Darkness

Mormon Decisions 10Journal of Discourses 8:209; “The Devil has the mastery of the earth: he has corrupted it, and has corrupted the children of men. He has led them in evil until they are almost entirely ruined, and are so far from God that they neither know Him nor his influence, and have almost lost sight of everything that pertains to eternity. This darkness is more prevalent, more dense, among the people of Christendom, than it is among the heathen. They have lost sight of all that is great and glorious—of all principles that pertain to life eternal.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, October 14, 1860

Ephesians 3:20-21; “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, 21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.”
