salt lake mormon temple 2Millennial Star, Vol. 17, No. 50, December 15, 1855, pg 785; “It is evident that truth, and its opposite, or the principles of good and evil must be co-existent with each other, and that the presence of one has ever been necessary to develop the nature and powers of the other. From this it would appear that organizations and intelligences must experience the effects of evil in order to understand its opposite, be redeemed by a sacrifice similar to the made for this earth, and receive purification, sanctification, and final redemption through faith, good works and obedience to similar laws and ordinances. Co-existent with the Gods of Eternity, there must have always been personal representatives of evil, or devils for them to subdue, in order that there might be an opposite in all things. Without opposition there can be no progression; without hate, no love; without darkness, no light; without sorrow, no joy; without a hell, no heaven; without devils, no Gods. All things must necessarily work out the designs of the Almighty, and increase His glory, exaltation, and power.”

Mormon Decisions 10Messages of the First Presidency, October 1942, 6:170-185; “In the great revelation on the three heavenly glories, the Lord said, speaking of those who will inherit the lowest of these, or the telestial glory:

“These are they who are liars, and sorcerers, and adulterers, and whoremongers, and whosoever loves and makes a lie.” — (D&C 76:103.)  The doctrine of this Church is that sexual sin — the illicit sexual relations of men and women — stands, in its enormity, next to murder. The Lord has drawn no essential distinctions between fornication, adultery, and harlotry or prostitution. Each has fallen under His solemn and awful condemnation.” – James R. Clark

2 Corinthians 11:3-4; “But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.”

Adam and EveLong before I became a Christian I was invited to attend a church service by a friend of mine in Las Vegas.  Both of our husbands were away fighting in the first Gulf War in Iraq (it was November 1990) and we were both expecting babies before the husbands were slated to come back.  At the end of a very long explanation from my friend on why I should attend church with her because I was bringing another life into the world, I relented – with conditions.  I wanted to sit at the back of the congregation so I could get up and leave in a hurry if I didn’t like what they had to say.

Grove. (See Asherah).

Asherah (Ashtoreth, Astarte). A fertility goddess made of a tree trunk. Referred to in the King James Version as a grove, or groves (Deut. 16:21; 1 Kgs. 14:15; Isa. 17:8).” – Joseph Fielding McConkie

Mormon Decisions 10Ensign, August 1976, “A New Commandment: Save Thyself and Thy Kindred!”, pg 9; “In what is probably the greatest of all recorded visions, given February 16, 1832, the Prophet saw that those to whom Noah offered the gospel and who were then destroyed in the flood, assuming they repent and accept the gospel in their spirit prison, shall not obtain celestial rest. Theirs is an everlasting terrestrial inheritance because they rejected the truth when it was offered to them in mortality.” – Bruce McConkie

salt lake mormon temple 2Glossary of Symbols, pg 254; “Brazen Sea. In Solomon’s Temple a large molten sea of brass placed on the backs of twelve brazen oxen (1 Kgs. 7:23-26). It was a baptismal font. Similar fonts, though not made of brass, are found in Latter-day Saint temples for the purpose of performing baptisms for the dead.”

Mormon Decisions 10Noah and the Flood, pgs 1-2; “Few men in any age were as great as Noah. In many respects he was like Adam, the first man. Both had served as ministering angels in the presence of God even after their mortal experience. Adam was Michael, the archangel, but Noah was Gabriel, one of those nearest to God. Of all the hosts of heaven, he was chosen to open the Christian era by announcing to Mary that she would become the mother of the Savior, Jesus Christ. He even designated the name by which the Redeemer should be known here on earth, saying He would be the Son of God….” – Mark E. Petersen, Apostle

Mormon Decisions 10Ensign, “The Worth of Souls”, November 1978, pg 14; “Immortality connotes life without end. Eternal life, on the other hand, connotes quality of life — exaltation, the highest type of immortality, the kind of life enjoyed by God himself. It is in the attainment of eternal life, which man must earn in mortality, that he reaches his full potentiality.” – Marion Romney

Mormon Decisions 10Ensign, “Personal Priesthood Responsibility”, November 2003, pg 44; “To bear the priesthood means you have a personal responsibility to magnify your calling. Let each opportunity to serve help to develop your power in the priesthood. In your personal grooming, follow the example of the living prophets. Doing so gives silent expression that you truly comprehend the importance of “the Holy Priesthood, after the Order of the Son of God.” –

Russell M. Nelson – Quorum of the Twelve

salt lake mormon temple 2Improvement Era Nov. 1965, p. 962; “Our Eternal Father would have every soul saved if that were feasible. Salvation, however, is based on merit and obedience to divine law and therefore is only obtained through compliance with divine commandments.” – Joseph Fielding Smith

Mormon Decisions 10Conference Report, Oct. 2003, pg 92; “The Three Witnesses never denied their testimony of the Book of Mormon. They could not because they knew it was true. They made sacrifices and faced difficulties beyond what most people ever know. Oliver Cowdery gave the same testimony about the divine origin of the Book of Mormon as he lay dying. But in the times of trial, they wavered in their faith that Joseph was still God’s prophet and that the only way to come unto the Savior was through His restored Church. That they continued to affirm what they saw and heard in that marvelous experience, during long periods of estrangement from the Church and from Joseph, makes their testimony more powerful.” – Apostle Henry B. Eyring

salt lake mormon temple 2Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg 74; “President Smith proposed the following question: What importance is there attached to the calling of the Twelve Apostles, different from the other callings or officers of the Church? . . . They are the Twelve Apostles, who are called to the office of the Traveling High Council, who are to preside over the churches of the Saints, among the Gentiles, where there is no presidency established; and they are to travel and preach among the Gentiles, until the Lord shall command them to go to the Jews. They are to hold the keys of this ministry, to unlock the door of the Kingdom of heaven unto all nations, and to preach the Gospel to every creature. This is the power, authority, and virtue of their apostleship.”

salt lake mormon temple 2LDS Church News, August 31, 1996; “Our scriptures say that God told Moses only about this planet. Mormon Decisions 10Teachings of Presidents of the Church; Joseph F. Smith, pg 100; “The object of our earthly existence is that we may have a fulness of joy, and that we may become the sons and daughters of God, in the fullest sense of the word, being heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ, to be kings and priests unto God, to inherit glory, dominion, exaltation, thrones and every power and attribute developed and possessed by our Heavenly Father. This is the object of our being on this earth. In order to attain unto this exalted position, it is necessary that we go through this mortal experience, or probation, by which we may prove ourselves worthy, through the aid of our elder brother Jesus.”
