Jesus Made Perfect

Today we’re looking at a passage of scripture the Mormon Church has zeroed in on, and made a doctrine from half a line in one verse of scripture. We’ll look at what the Church has taught, and compare it with what the Bible really means when it said, ‘Jesus was made perfect’.
The length of the sermon we’re looking at today was extraordinarily long, therefore, we’ll only be looking at one small subject from Mr. Taylor’s teaching today. We’ll be exploring the rest of it in the near future! If you’d like to read it in full, you can do so by clicking on the link provided within the text below.
Hebrews 2:9-10; “But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. 10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.” [emp. mine]
John Taylor: Christian Gospel is Perversion

Journal of Discourses 13:15-19; “Go to the Christians and they have one God, but he has neither body, parts, nor passions; his presence is everywhere, but he exists nowhere. They have never heard nor seen him, and they do not know anybody who ever did, not even their ministers, whom, they claim, are sent of God. They are equally as ignorant in relation to their own existence and the ends of their creation. They say they are going to Heaven, but all they can tell you about it is that it is beyond the bounds of time and space.
This kind of doctrine does not suit me…that which is called the Gospel in the Christian world is not the Gospel, but a perversion of it. When Jesus came he came to do away with the law and to introduce the Gospel that their fathers had lost because of transgression. … Why, these Christians, so called, cannot trust their God in anything.” – John Taylor, Salt Lake City, March 14, 1869
Was 19th Century Christianity Corrupt as Hell?

Acts 5:41-42; “And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. 42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.”
By 1860, approximately 65,000 Saints were comfortably settled into the valleys of the Wasatch Front.1 Everything they owned was either packed into wagons and handcarts, or simply carried for the trek west. The ‘everything’ included the inventory of their hearts. Upon their arrival into Utah, the seedlings of mocking Christianity in Nauvoo were simply unpacked, and replanted in the rich soils of the Utah mountainsides.
Having no outside influence allowed the new fledgling religion to take hold where roots could grow deeply into the rugged mountainsides. And take root it did. Without outsider influence pressing upon them, the gene pool of philosophical thought was rather shallow.
Christianity v. Mormonism

Over the past few weeks we’ve received a lot of e-mails and/or comments on our blog and site expressing disdain for the work we do at the ministry. Some have been nice, which is always great!
My response to rude comments is this –
Why should Christians stand by and listen to the comments without defending the work God gave us to do?

Deseret News, June 9, 1880, p. 280; “David prayed that God would send his
enemies to hell quickly. Jesus, when he was being crucified suffering the pain of a cruel death, said “Father forgive them for they know not what they do”. I like that prayer much better than the other one. Father forgive them for they know not what they do. They are thy children though in the dark. Thou hast enlightened our minds for which we feel thankful; but, Oh Lord, forgive them and lead them, if thou canst, in the way of life. This is the feeling we ought to have…” – John Taylor (LDS Prophet)

Journal of Discourses 10:114; “It is not fully comprehended why it was necessary that Jesus Christ should leave the heavens, his Father’s abode and presence, and come upon the earth to offer himself up a sacrifice; that he should, according to the Scripture saying, “Take away sin by the sacrifice of himself;” why this should be, why it was necessary that his blood should be shed is an apparent mystery. It is true that we are told that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins; but why this? Why should such a law exist?…Jesus Christ is spoken of in the Scriptures as “The Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world.” What sins of the world did he take away? We are told that it is the sin which Adam committed. We do not know much about Adam nor what he did; but we know that this sacrifice took place and that we are in the position we now occupy, and we are ready to believe…it was the will of God…” – John Taylor, Salt Lake City, February 22, 1863

The Government of God, p 110; “But after the flood, in the days of Peleg, the earth was divided.-See Genesis 10:25,-a short history, to be sure, of so great an event; but still it will account for the mighty revolution, which rolled the sea from its own place in the north, and brought it to interpose between different portions of the earth, which were thus parted asunder, and moved into something near their present form; this, together with the earthquakes, revolutions, and commotions which have since taken place, have all contributed to reduce the face of the earth to its present state; while the great curses which have fallen upon different portions, because of the wickedness of men, will account for the stagnant swamps, the sunken lakes, the dead seas, and great deserts.” – John Taylor

Journal of Discourses 24:126 “But let me refer you to another blessing connected with Abraham, namely, that in him and his seed should all the nations of the earth be blessed. Or, in other words, that God would honor him by making of him and his seed agents through whom He would communicate truth, intelligence and salvation to the world. It is said “the glory of God is intelligence,” and He is desirous to impart this intelligence to the human family, that through it they may be exalted to the Godhead.” – John Taylor, Salt Lake City, April 8, 1883

Not that everybody that is in the world will obey the Gospel; but the Lord will have His own way in manipulating His affairs, and great tribulation will overtake the inhabitants of the earth.” – John Taylor, Salt Lake City, April 8, 1883

It also came from God…When this system was first introduced among this people, it was one of the greatest crosses that ever was taken up by any set of men since the world stood…When I see any of our people, men or women, opposing a principle of this kind, I have years ago set them down as on the high road to apostacy, and I do to-day; I consider them apostates…” – John Taylor, Salt Lake City, April 7, 1866

Journal of Discourses 23:336-337; “Why is it that good men should be tried? Why is it, in fact, that we should have a devil? Why did not the Lord kill him long ago? Because he could not do without him. He needed the devil and a great many of those who do his bidding just to keep men straight, that we may learn to place our dependence upon God, and trust in Him, and to observe his laws and keep his commandments. When he destroyed the inhabitants of the antediluvian world, he suffered a descendant of Cain to come through the flood in order that he might be properly represented upon the earth. And Satan keeps busy all the time, and he will until he is bound; and I expect they will then have good times until he is loose again.” – John Taylor, Grantsville, UT, October 29, 1882

On the LDS website I came across an interesting submission in the student manuals on presidents of the Church.
The write-up of John Taylor, 3rd president of the Church, paints a picture of a man who had done nothing wrong and the feds went after him because he announced that he was a Christian.
Here’s what they had to say;

Life of John Taylor, pg. 255; “In this our first issue it may be expected that something would be said in relation to this matter. This we undertake as cheerfully as any other task; for we are not ashamed here in this great metropolis of America * * * to declare that we are polygamists.” – B.H.
