Today (3/26/12) I traveled over to the LDS website and found a very sad state of affairs. http://www.lds.org/?lang=eng The front page of their site says;
“The Savior Suffers in Gethsemane”
You’re going to see a video of a white Mormon Jesus with a British accent going to the Garden, kneeling down and praying the words from the Bible. At some point he starts sniffling while they show the disciples sleeping and Jesus walking over to ask them why they can’t stay awake. I find it interesting the Church thinks the Bible has been mistranslated yet they use the very words from it…hmmm….

Today while perusing the Encyclopedia of Mormonism I came across an interesting statement by Joseph Smith. It’s times like these when I am convinced they drop little (big, theologically speaking) innuendos steering the Mormon people away from Jesus. I was looking for an official statement on their beliefs regarding temple marriages, the endowments they take out and the importance they play in the Mormon’s life. Here’s what it said:

Today I received a link to a story in the Salt Lake Tribune. Lo and behold there was another evangelical telling me (and millions of other people) that evangelicals can’t “attack and demean Mormons or President Barack Obama and still consider yourself a follower of Jesus Christ”.

Mormonism and the Washington Post
Today I received an e-mail from my good friend Ed Decker asking me to post a comment on the blog site for The Washington Post.
In an article written by one of their reporters, Sally Quinn, she related a conversation she had with one of her friends she described as a “liberal atheist”. This conversation between the two of them was focused on why people who are religious are weird and why Smith’s religion is too new for anyone to believe it. I can appreciate their conversation because I used to think and feel the exact same way.

According to the NY Times in November 2011, the Mormons hired two big name advertising agencies in 2009, Ogilvy and Mather and Hall and Partners, to gather info on what people thought of Mormons. Joseph Smith’s Evil Thoughts
Discourses of Joseph Smith, pg. 273; “”The Lord once told me that what I asked for I should have. I have been afraid to ask God to kill my enemies, lest some of them should, peradventure, repent.” (George Q. Cannon, Life of Joseph Smith, The Prophet, pp. 527-28.)”
2 Corinthians 10:5; “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
I am so utterly grateful my Lord and God Jesus snatched me out of this fiery pit. After enjoying almost nineteen years of salvation I still can’t believe He saved me of all people!
The remarks by Mr. Smith tell a story. They speak of a man filled with haughtiness and no fear of God. Pray for the Mormon in your life today that lives under this domination which has been passed on down through the generations.
It’s obvious leaders in the Church have no remorse over some of his remarks else they would’ve discarded this instead of leaving it in the piles of papers for people to discover. And what we found in this is Joseph Smith’s true character.
Did Smith believe God could’ve overlooked or forgotten someone might “repent”? And why is Smith judging someone’s heart? Who is he to say someone needs to repent? My list of questions could go on but I am thinking upon the words of Paul in the scripture above. Hold all thoughts captive…

The Glory of God
If the glory of God is intelligence then what should we make of 1 Corinthians 13:8 which says;
“Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.”
Does this mean that God’s glory will vanish?
Gospel Standards, pg. 160; “We, of course, seek after knowledge, light, and intelligence and to inform ourselves upon all matters of importance. The glory of God, we have been told by the Prophet Joseph, is intelligence; and we desire to gain knowledge and to become as intelligent as we possibly can…—Era, 24:866.” – Heber J. Grant
Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 297; “It is not wisdom that we should have all knowledge at once presented before us; but that we should have a little at a time; then we can comprehend it. President Smith then read the 2nd Epistle of Peter, 1st chapter, 16th to last verses, and dwelt upon the 19th verse with some remarks. Add to your faith knowledge, etc. The principle of knowledge is the principle of salvation. This principle can be comprehended by the faithful and diligent; and every one that does not obtain knowledge sufficient to be saved will be condemned. Baptism for the Dead and being Born Again
I often wonder what Mormons think of the passage of scripture in John when Nicodemus asked Jesus what he must do to be born again. While we’ve explored this issue in our Mormon Dilemmas section before, today I began wondering about another angle to this scenario.
If Jesus told Nicodemus he had to be born again then how are dead people born again?
John 3:3; “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
The Mormon Church teaches that they can’t be saved without their dead and the dead can’t be saved without members doing works for them in the temple.
D&C 128:18; “…baptism for the dead. For we without them cannot be made perfect; neither can they without us be made perfect.”
So how can a dead person be born again? Remember, we’re not talking about being spiritually dead, but a literal dead person.
The Mormons I’ve spoken with have told me the person who is dead has the choice of accepting or rejecting that which was done for them in the temple. But this doesn’t answer the question so it’s something I’d keep asking them about.
I also wonder how they feel about Moroni 10:26 and 2 Nephi 9:38 in light of the Doctrine and Covenants passage listed above.
Moroni 10:26; “And wo unto them who shall do these things away and die, for they die in their sins, and they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God; and I speak it according to the words of Christ; and I lie not.”
2 Nephi 9:38; “And, in fine, wo unto all those who die in their sins; for they shall return to God, and behold his face, and remain in their sins.”

Brigham Young’s words more than 150 years ago seems less than prophetic or inspiring in today’s day and age when he said the following;
Journal of Discourses 7:286; “Mankind are here because they are the offspring of parents who were first brought here from another planet, and power was given them to propagate their species, and they were commanded to multiply and replenish the earth.” – Brigham Young, October 9, 1859, Salt Lake City
It gives the line “what planet are you from” a whole new meaning.
