Old-Testament-Gospel-Doctrine-Teachers-Manual-35570000The purpose of lesson 39 is to:” To strengthen each class member’s testimony of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.” It covers Isaiah chapters 50-53 with a few references from other Mormon scriptures. (Unfortunately Mormons have been taught to believe that it’s impossible to truly understand the bible without the Book of Mormon. )

Mormon Decisions 10A Ministry of Meetings: The Apostolic Diaries of Rudger Clawson [p. 128] “[Saturday, 30 December 1899]…The principal topic of discussion was the attitude of the brethren when arrested and found guilty of unlawful cohabitation. Would it be proper for them to promise to obey the law—or rather express their intention to do so?

Mormon Decisions 10The Essential Orson Pratt, pp 150-151; “The gathering together of the few scattered manuscripts which compose what is now termed the Bible was the work of uninspired man which took place centuries after John finished his manuscript.

Among the vast number of professedly inspired manuscripts, scattered through the world, man, poor, weak, ignorant man assumed the authority to select a few, which according to his frail judgment, he believed or conjectured were of God, but the balance not agreeing, perhaps, with his peculiar notions of divine inspiration, were rejected as spurious.

Mormon Decisions 10Doctrines of Salvation 3:198; “In my judgment there is no book on earth yet come to man as important as the book known as the Doctrine and Covenants, with all due respect to the Book of Mormon, and the Bible, and the Pearl of Great Price, which we say are our standards in doctrine. The book of Doctrine and Covenants to us stands in a peculiar position above them all”. – Joseph Fielding Smith

Mormon Decisions 10Journal of Discourses 4:56; “I have told you many times that there are multitudes of pure and holy spirits waiting to take tabernacles, now what is our duty?—to prepare tabernacles for them… It is the duty of every righteous man and woman to prepare tabernacles for all the spirits they can; hence if my women leave, I will go and search up others who will abide the celestial law, and let all I now have go where they please; though I will send the Gospel to them.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, September 21, 1856

Mormon Decisions 10Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, pp 32-33; “Long before you were born a program was developed by your creators…The principal personalities in this great drama were a Father Elohim, perfect in wisdom, judgment, and person, and two sons, Lucifer and Jehovah”.

Old-Testament-Gospel-Doctrine-Teachers-Manual-35570000The name of this week’s lesson was “I Will Betroth Thee unto Me in Righteousness” and it focuses on Hosea’s marriage to his adulterous wife Gomer to compare it with the idolatrous behavior of Israel.

The teacher is instructed to ask members on several occasions to explain what Israel was doing wrong and then compares all this with the way we reject Christ today.  Wow, if this isn’t rich I don’t know what is.

Old-Testament-Gospel-Doctrine-Teachers-Manual-35570000The main focus of this lesson is on missionary work and how it’s the Mormon’s responsibility to share their gospel all around the world. It touches on the story of Jonah and Micah and how they are examples of Mormonism in action.

The title to the third point in their lesson caught my attention. It reads:

“Micah prophesies of the mission of latter-day Israel.”

Old-Testament-Gospel-Doctrine-Teachers-Manual-35570000I had to chuckle a little when I glanced over this next lesson which is on the book of Job. What I found funny (and not in a Ha-Ha way) is this is the same book of the bible my pastor has taken the past couple of months to go over with us on Wednesday nights and the Mormon Church only takes one class period. Go figure!

The lesson covers four points from the life of Job. In the interest of time I’d like to focus on only one of these points. It reads:

“Job finds strength in his personal righteousness and integrity.”

Mormon Decisions 10The Essential Joseph Smith, p 201; “Last Monday Morning certain men came to me. “Bro[ther] Joseph[,] Hyrum is no prophet. He cant lead the church” You must lead the church. If you resign[, etc.] I felt curious and said here we learn in [the church about] a priesthood after the order of Melchisedeck—Prophet, Priest and King, and I will advance from Prophet to Priest and then to King not to the kingdoms of this Earth but of the most High God.” [sic]

Old-Testament-Gospel-Doctrine-Teachers-Manual-35570000This lesson once again finds the Mormon Sunday School class bulldozing through not one, but two books of the Bible. It covers some of the teachings in Proverbs and gives only a brief nod to Ecclesiastes with no real “study” to be found.

I know, by now I shouldn’t be surprised or taken aback by what they pass off as a bible study in the world of Mormonism. Still I can’t help but wonder if the class members walk away feeling that something is missing from their Sunday school class that day, or hunger for something more, something with a little more meat to it.

Mormon Decisions 10The Essential Joseph Smith, pp 200-201; “I see no faults in the church. Let me be resurrected with the Saints, whether to heaven or hell or any other good place—good society. What do we care if the society is good? Don’t care what a character is if he’s my firend. A friend, a true friend, and I will be a friend to him. Friendship is the grand fundamental principle of Mormonism, to revolution[ize and] civilize the world, [to] pour forth love…I do not dwell upon your faults. You shall not upon mine. After you have covered up all the faults among you the prettyest thing is [to] have no faults at all. Meek, quiet, &c. [If] Presbyterians [have] any truth, embrace that. Baptist, Methodist, &c. Get all the good in the world. Come out a pure Mormon.” [sic]

Mormon Decisions 10Conference Report, April 1939, Morning Meeting, p 57; “The negro is an unfortunate man. He has been given a black skin. But that is as nothing compared with that greater handicap that he is not permitted to receive the Priesthood and the ordinances of the temple, necessary to prepare men and women to enter into and enjoy a fulness of glory in the celestial kingdom. What is the reason for this condition, we ask, and I find it to my satisfaction to think that as spirit children of our Eternal Father they were not valiant in the fight” – George F. Richards

Mormon Decisions 10Selected Writings of Robert L. Millet: Gospel Scholars Series, p 190; “The four Gospels are particularly plain in setting forth the true nature of God and the various labors of the members of the Godhead. Indeed, one has to become involved in a stretching series of doctrinal maneuvers in order to derive the concept of Trinity or of a triune God in the New Testament…

Mormon Decisions 10Seeking the Spirit, p 88; “In our day three fundamental truths are essential to a valid testimony: first, that Jesus is the Christ; second, that Joseph Smith is a prophet of God; and third, that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true and living church on the face of the whole earth. All valid testimony must embrace the spiritual witness that Jesus is the Christ, for “there is none other way nor name given under heaven whereby man can be saved in the kingdom of God.” (2 Nephi 31:21.)”. – Joseph Fielding McConkie

Mormon Decisions 10Mortal Messiah 2:177; “It is better, no doubt, to have a false religion and to worship false gods than to have no religion and no worship at all. Neutrality is as nothing, and indifference is denigrating and damning. Those who are lukewarm—who are neither hot nor cold; who take no affirmative stand; who do not seek the blessings available through worship—will one day be spewed out of the divine mouth, as it were, and find their place in one of the lesser eternal realms.” – Bruce McConkie

Mormon Decisions 10Times and Seasons,Vol. 5, No. 6, pg 474; “Whereas brother Richard Hewitt has called on me to-day, to know my views concerning some doctrines that are preached in your place, and states to me that some of your elders say, that a man having a certain priesthood, may have as many wives as he pleases, and that doctrine is taught here: I say unto you that that man teaches false doctrine, for there is no such doctrine taught here. And any man that is found teaching privately or publicly any such doctrine, is culpable, and will stand a chance to be brought before the High Council, and loose his license and membership also: therefore he had better beware what he is about.” – Hyrum Smith, March 15, 1844

Mormon Decisions 10Journal of Discourses 3:38; “The Greek and Roman Churches, which have been called Christian, and which take the name of Christians as a cloak, have worshipped innumerable idols. On this account, on the simple subject of the Deity and His worship, if nothing more, I should rather incline, of the two, after all my early traditions, education, and prejudices, to the side of Mahomet, for on this point he is on the side of truth, and the Christian world on the side of idolatry and heathenism.” – Parley P. Pratt, Salt Lake City, December 23, 1855

Today is the 2nd part of our look at the article in Ensign that we touched upon yesterday. There are a few topics I feel are important to point out and ask that you use them as witnessing tools for your Mormon friends and loved ones!
