We receive countless e-mails and phone calls on a daily basis asking us how to witness to a friend or loved one in Mormonism.  While I’ve numbered the tips below for witnessing it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re in order of importance.

With that said, it’s important to remember everything listed will be a totally new experience to the Mormon.  When I converted to Christianity I was a few months shy of my thirtieth birthday, and quickly learned every single thing I had known up until that time, was a lie.

Our new and updated version of ‘How to Witness to a Mormon’ is a result of PowerPoint presentations given at churches. The majority of it comes from copious note taking while listening to, and watching dozens of audio, and video tapes Dr. Walter Martin (1928-1969) produced during his long, and industrious career.

To say those working in the counter-cult movement owes a debt of gratitude for his work, would not be an overstatement whatsoever. Many have heralded him as the father of the counter-cult movement.

One comment he made always gives me pause, and has reminded me on a number of occasions to be dilegent in witnessing to those who don’t know our Lord.

‘The cults are the unpaid bills of the body of Christ.’

We’re listing the same first 12 points from our presentations, and 20 helps for friends and loved ones, thereafter.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

pbs-newshourThe other day I came across an article on PBS.org written by a man who shares his experience in converting from Catholicism to Mormonism. In summary, he says that he didn’t choose Mormonism at first, but eventually it chose him. He states that deciding to leave the religion he knew for the Mormon Church was result of his parent’s conversion, a decision he said he accepted without any complaints. Later, however, he realized that he couldn’t continue to rely on someone else’s faith and spiritual experiences, these were things he had to discover for himself.

In his closing remarks, he states “I am a Mormon”, a statement I can recall saying many times when I was asked about my faith, or religion. As a Mormon, my identity was in the Church. My mind, my heart, my soul, my whole being belonged to the Church. Anytime I was faced with a new idea, or situation I always thought, “what would the Church have me do”.

2 Kings 17:16; “And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.”

The Occult in Mormonism and the Life of Joseph SmithThe very foundation of Mormonism is a deliberate, not to mention brazen, show of the many tentacles of the Occult at its best. Therefore, it goes without saying the latter issue must be acknowledged if we’re to provide an honest picture of the former.

It’s virtually impossible to discuss Mormonism without acknowledging the cultic practices of Joseph Smith. For this reason, we’ve compiled a list of the more common paraphernalia he and his family used, upon which, the Mormon Church is built.

Mormon Decisions 10Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith, (2011), Chapter 27: ‘Beware the Bitter Fruits of Apostasy,’ pp. 315–26; joseph smith 1“There is a superior intelligence bestowed upon such as obey the Gospel with full purpose of heart, which, if sinned against, the apostate is left naked and destitute of the Spirit of God, and he is, in truth, nigh unto cursing, and his end is to be burned. When once that light which was in them is taken from them they become as much darkened as they were previously enlightened, and then, no marvel, if all their power should be enlisted against the truth, and they, Judas-like, seek the destruction of those who were their greatest benefactors.”

Mormon Decisions 10New Era, ‘The Temple What It Means To You,’ April 1993;

“Temple ordinances are valid for eternity…

One sweet LDS girl was asked by her father to postpone her marriage in the temple so he could provide a lavish wedding in a large church that all his friends could attend. She said, “Daddy, I can’t do as you ask. I have seen how you and Mom have loved each other, and yet you have not married in the temple. I made up my mind as a little girl that I would be married to my husband for eternity and not just for this life. You have had my whole lifetime to prepare to go to the temple with me, and you have not done so. I’m sorry, but I must do what I believe to be right.”…

Glenn Beck peddles David Barton’s rewrite of the NASB to share a Holy America and make some quick bucks

Ed Decker

Glenn BeckAfter hearing Glenn Beck promoting a special kind of bible, I skimmed through the numerous websites promoting the Founders’ Bible and the ministry of David Barton, Glenn Beck’s token Christian Pastor.  The Bible is more a declaration of the holiness of the United Sates of America than a true study bible.

Mormon Decisions 10Ensign, “Personal Priesthood Responsibility”, November 2003, pg 44; “To bear the priesthood means you have a personal responsibility to magnify your calling. Let each opportunity to serve help to develop your power in the priesthood. In your personal grooming, follow the example of the living prophets. Doing so gives silent expression that you truly comprehend the importance of “the Holy Priesthood, after the Order of the Son of God.” –

mailbagHere are the latest e-mails from Mormons who write to us!  We’re posting these so you can come alongside us and pray for them as well.  They’ve all come in via the site and blog.

Above all else please know we’re not here to bash the Mormon people or to ridicule them. Our hearts are broken that they believe the lies of the evil one and pray daily they come to know the real Jesus!

Thanks for praying!

With Love in Christ;

Michelle

What? Are you kidding me?  That was my first reaction when I read the headlines screaming across the page I read in the Salt Lake Trib

As we write articles and share the gospel online and elsewhere this is one of the reasons we do what we do at LAM.

The body of Christ needs to wake up and pay attention.  I’m not sure who it was that cast the final vote for the status of “National Bible City”, but we’re on our knees they’ll rescind their generous gift.

What is Christianity?

Mormon Decisions 10Family Home Evening Resource Book, Lesson 13: Baptism and the Name of Christ, pg 52; “What does the word Christian mean to you?

Let your family discuss what being a Christian means today. Emphasize that because The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true church of Christ, we have a great responsibility to live as Christians.”

True Mormonism

Something to ponder before the next Mormon missionary shows up on your doorstep:

Mormonism is Leaven to Christian Churches of Today

Teachings of Lorenzo Snow, pg. 16; “Mormonism has acted as a leaven upon other religious faiths. Consciously or unconsciously they have absorbed and utilized it. This is especially manifest in the growth of liberal ideas among the Protestant churches within the last half century. (2 January 1902, MS, 64:22.)”

Let’s remember the warning to us put forth by Jude not to deny our Lord and caving into society’s problems whatever they might be.

Jude 1:4; “For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Lorenzo Snow was the fifth Mormon president of the LDS Church.

Thought of the Day about the Graham Family, Romney and Integrity

We’ve written about the election so many times now that I’ve lost count. I never would’ve dreamt that I’d be this involved and at this stage I can’t wait until November 7th to come rolling around so it’ll be over with.

Melissa wrote a piece about a week ago (http://lifeafterministry.com/2012/10/12/god-is-still-in-control/) that should sum up the views of Christians worldwide, alas, some of us seem to panic at the last minute and ditch our moral convictions to pick what Ed Decker called, the lesser of two evils.

Exit story of Tanya W.

I wasn’t born into the Mormon Church; I was actually born and dedicated into a loving Christian church and family.  When I was 5 and my brother was 8 my Mother left my Dad for another man who was Mormon.  Because it wasn’t common practice in the 70’s for Dad’s to fight for custody we lived with our Mother.  I was baptized into the church when I was 8 and so was my Brother.  We thought that we were happier because of the church.  On the outside we were a very strong Mormon family.

Introduction

Before we get into the actual “study” part of this Mentoring Handbook, I feel there is one critical point to understand about the ex-Mormon before you begin.

When I left Mormonism after thirty years, it didn’t take me long to realize that every single thing I knew in life was a lie.

Everything from food and clothing to the English language has to be re-evaluated by the person leaving the Church.  Because they have lived in a state of fear of losing salvation and sometimes jobs, families and homes which can produce paranoia, sometimes there is a great amount of confusion in their minds.  Threats, whether real or implied, have been the main meal of doctrine they’ve been fed.  In this religion the meaning of words and information from the “outside” has been twisted by leaders of the Church in order to control the members.  Being taught you will lose salvation by not belonging to their church is a threat and a scary process to have to endure.

The length of time and level of activity spent in the Church typically determines how long it’ll take to work through the exodus of Mormonism.

Shame on you Franklin Graham for supporting Mitt Romney!

I think back to all the years I volunteered for your father’s crusades and they had me help the ministry in warning people about Mormonism and helping Mormons come out of that cult and you endorse him again on ABC News tonight with David Muir.

We’re praying Mr. Graham reevaluates the path he’s chosen to take and publicly recants his words.

It’s nice to see there are people in the public eye who do acknowledge that Mormonism is not Christianity.  And sometimes it’s even surprising to find out that news sources you didn’t think would care actually take an objective view and tell the truth.
