Book of Mormon Golden Plates

Focus, focus, focus…

An article in the Deseret News the other day left me shaking my head and asking why.

I’m wondering why LDS members believe the propaganda panned out by the Church that absolutely defies logic. The title of the article is self explanatory so I’m going to just pull out a few remarks and highlight them here to see if they line up with what God and a history book says.

Mormon Decisions 10Ensign, December 2013, p 7; “As we come to understand more fully what it means for Jesus to be the Only Begotten Son of the Father, our faith in Christ will increase. Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said, “Faith in Jesus Christ is the conviction and assurance of (1) His status as the Only Begotten Son of God, (2) His infinite Atonement, and (3) His literal Resurrection.” 2 Modern prophets have testified: “[Jesus Christ] was … the Only Begotten Son in the flesh, the Redeemer of the world.” 3

Mormon Decisions 10General Women’s Meeting, “Keeping Covenants Protects Us, Prepares Us, and Empowers Us,” March 2014; “We are daughters of our Heavenly Father. We are covenant-making women of all ages walking the path of mortality back to His presence. Keeping covenants protects us, prepares us, and empowers us.” – Rosemary M. Wixom

Mormon Decisions 10General Conference, ‘Approaching the Throne of God with Confidence’, October 2014; “Become really, really good at forgiving. “I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men” (D&C 64:10). Forgive everyone, everything, all the time, or at least strive to do so, thus allowing forgiveness into your own life. Don’t hold grudges, don’t be easily offended, forgive and forget quickly, and don’t ever think that you are exempt from this commandment. Spiritual confidence increases when you know that the Lord knows that you bear no ill feelings toward another soul.” – Jörg Klebingat

Mormon Decisions 10General Conference, ‘Approaching the Throne of God with Confidence’, October 2014; “Become really, really good at repenting thoroughly and quickly. Because the Atonement of Jesus Christ is very practical, you should apply it generously 24/7, for it never runs out. Embrace the Atonement of Jesus Christ and repentance as things that are to be welcomed and applied daily according to the Great Physician’s orders. Establish an attitude of ongoing, happy, joyful repentance by making it your lifestyle of choice. In doing so, beware of the temptation to procrastinate, and don’t expect the world to cheer you on. Keeping your eyes on the Savior, care more about what He thinks of you, and let the consequences follow. Spiritual confidence increases when you voluntarily and joyfully repent of sins, both small and great, in real time by applying the Atonement of Jesus Christ.” – Jörg Klebingat

General Conference, ‘Approaching the Throne of God with Confidence’, October 201Mormon Decisions 104; “Embrace voluntary, wholehearted obedience as part of your life. Acknowledge that you cannot love God without also loving His commandments. The Savior’s standard is clear and simple: “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Selective obedience brings selective blessings, and choosing something bad over something worse is still choosing wrong. You can’t watch a bad movie and expect to feel virtuous because you did not watch a very bad one. Faithful observance of some commandments doesn’t justify neglecting others. Abraham Lincoln rightly said, “When I do good I feel good, when I do bad I feel bad” (in William H. Herndon and Jesse William Weik, Herndon’s Lincoln: The True Story of a Great Life, 3 vols. [1889], 3:439).” – Jörg Klebingat

General Conference, ‘Live According to the Words of tMormon Decisions 10he Prophets,’ October 2014; “Our Father in Heaven loves all of His children and desires that they know and understand His plan of happiness. Therefore, He calls prophets, those who have been ordained with power and authority to act in God’s name for the salvation of His children. They are messengers of righteousness, witnesses of Jesus Christ and the infinite power of His Atonement. They hold the keys of the kingdom of God on earth and authorize the performance of saving ordinances.” – Carol F. McConkie

LDS Manual, The LifMormon Decisions 10e and Teachings of Jesus and His Apostles (1979), pp 9-31; “There was in Palestine a couple, Joseph and Mary. They lived in Nazareth. They had traveled, evidently, from Nazareth to Bethlehem in order to pay a tax that had been decreed by the Roman Emperor. That was the ostensible purpose. She, heavy with child, traveled all that distance on mule-back, guarded and protected as one about to give birth to a half-Deity. No other man in the history of this world of ours has ever had such an ancestry—God the Father on the one hand and Mary the Virgin on the other.”

Mormon Decisions 10Mormon Scholars Testify – Royal Skousen on how he knows the BoM is true.

“As I was reading this passage, the Spirit witnessed to me, “This really happened.” What is interesting about this passage is that I didn’t actually read “she clapped her hands” (the reading based on the printer’s manuscript), but instead I read “she clasped her hands” (the reading found in the 1830 edition as well as in all LDS editions). Now I do not take this personal witness as evidence that I should reject the earliest reading, clapped. It simply means that the Lord witnesses the truthfulness of this book irrespective of the minor errors that have crept in. I know of no error that changes any doctrine or the basic account of the text. There is no error, awkward expression, or ungrammaticality in any of the printed editions of the book that will prevent the honest reader from gaining a testimony of the Book of Mormon.

Mormon Decisions 10Conference Report, October 1990, p 108; “Except where the wicked crime of incest or rape was involved, or where competent medical authorities certify that the life of the mother is in jeopardy, or that a severely defective fetus cannot survive birth, abortion is clearly a ‘thou shalt not.’ Even in these very exceptional cases, much sober prayer is required to make the right choice.” – Boyd K. Packer

Mormon Decisions 10Doctrines of Salvation 2:87; “When a man and a woman are married and they agree, or covenant, to limit their offspring to two or three, and practice devices to accomplish this purpose, they are guilty of iniquity which eventually must be punished. Unfortunately this evil doctrine is being taught as a virtue by many people who consider themselves cultured and highly educated. It has even crept in among members of the Church and has been advocated in some of the classes within the Church.” – Joseph Fielding Smith

Mormon Decisions 10Today we’re mixing things up again! I’m dividing this dilemma in two parts so let’s go!

Where Is Wisdom?, p 389-390; “…the writer calls attention to the well-known distinct primary divisions of the human race now on the earth, namely, the Caucasian, the Mongolian, and the Negroid; and that these branches of mankind differ not only in bodily appearance but especially in mental qualities. The black skin of the Negro is not simply an excessive sunburn; no Caucasian becomes black, however long he may reside in tropical climates; and no Negro born and bred in temperate climates ever becomes white.

Mormon Decisions 10Mormon Doctrine, p 770; “Stubborn people will be damned unless they forsake their course of obstinacy, turn to humility, and are “baptized without stubbornness of heart.” (Alma 32:14-17.) After baptism, as part of working out their salvation, the saints must strive to shake off every particle of stubbornness against any of the laws and ordinances of the gospel.”

crosses 3As I mentioned last week Melissa and I are organizing the daily dilemmas we post and I’m trying to ‘fix’ the nightmare I’ve created. If I ever do this again I give everyone permission to nag at me.

Today while working on this monstrosity I came across an interesting situation. The sheer amount of dilemmas for one of the subject matters stuck out like a red flag so I thought I’d share what I discovered. I’ve categorized all the topics from A to Z and in the category of ‘Christians’ I noticed just how much the Church disapproves of Christians and Christianity.

Mormon Decisions 10Messenger and Advocate, vol. 1, July 1835, no. 10; “…and the land was left to the possession of the red men, who were without intelligence, only in the affairs of their wars; and having no records, only preserving their history by tradition from father to son, lost the account of their true origin, and wandered from river to river, from hill to hill, from mountain to mountain, and from sea to sea, till the land was again peopled, in a measure, by a rude, wild, revengeful, warlike and barbarous race. Such are our Indians”.

Mormon Decisions 10There’s been a lot of back and forth arguments going on in the past several weeks between Glenn Beck and numerous Christian conservative organizations.  From Ed Decker with Saints Alive to The Blaze (conservative news portal), many have openly questioned the motives of Liberty University when they invited a Mormon to give the commencement speech for the graduating class of 2014.

Mormon Decisions 10A Comprehensive History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 1: 392 – 393; “It is the Christ’s church in all these respects; but it is an institution which also belongs to the saints. It is their refuge from the confusion and religious doubt of the world. It is their instructor in principle, doctrine, and righteousness. It is their guide in matters of faith and morals. They have a conjoint ownership in it with Jesus Christ, which ownership is recognized in the latter part of the title. “The Church * * * of Latter-day Saints,” is equivalent to “The Church of Jesus Christ,” and “The Church of the Latter-day Saints””.

Glenn Beck peddles David Barton’s rewrite of the NASB to share a Holy America and make some quick bucks

Ed Decker

Glenn BeckAfter hearing Glenn Beck promoting a special kind of bible, I skimmed through the numerous websites promoting the Founders’ Bible and the ministry of David Barton, Glenn Beck’s token Christian Pastor.  The Bible is more a declaration of the holiness of the United Sates of America than a true study bible.
